Naturally I'm way late with this reference to Read It and Weep. Rainbow Dash as egghead—literally.I realize that this is the first digital painting I've uploaded to DeviantArt. I don't make those that often, maybe because they take so darn long to complete. This one was made over the course of about one week. Also, drawing 99 books in a single image—that is more than enough to break one's sanity.

Wait, you made this in Gimp?
How do you get the outer lines of the objects/character to... y'know, not look all blury and stuff? 
For example, I drew this and this entirely in GIMP, and all the outlines are blurry.
The only way I could figure out for myself to NOT make it look like that was to draw flat-color in a different program, import the result, and then only use GIMP for visual highlights/shading.

Yes, this is in fact one of the earliest paintings I made in Gimp, and as such not even the best example of what can be done with the program.
Getting sharp edges mostly requires understanding your tools and avoiding some common pitfalls. Most importantly I'd advise to stay away as much as you can from tools that have a softening effect. So avoid using soft brushes, smudge tools, blur filters (duh), etc. Also you can always reinforce an edge by repainting it with a hard edged brush. Tidying up edges like this is a common step in my painting process.

Yes, I definitely noticed the link with surrealism while I was working on this. Funny how it reminded me of The Son of Man too. Maybe because I had already seen a ponyfied version of that painting?
