Description
Cheerilee fallen asleep in the classroom of the Ponyville schoolhouse, while the morning light is about to wake her. She must be a very dedicated teacher, working through the night on her students' assignments. The classroom is quite an interesting scene to draw, and this piece is closely based on the imagery you can see in the show. The globe and the pictures on the wall are all there, though I did simplify it a bit by leaving out a few other objects. The writing on the blackboard is straight from the show though. It looks like advanced mathematics to me, if that really is a differential operator there. Man, those schoolchildren must be geniuses.
There are a lot of interesting aspects to the image. I initially started working on it as a study in lighting, trying to realistically capture the morning light shining through the window. The light rays were somewhat tricky to get right, but I'm pretty satisfied with the result. Also a fair bit of perspective construction was required to get a convincing looking scene.

Is she even married? That would have made her escapades during hearts and hooves day particularly embarassing.

this is fantistic and conjors memorys of accasionaly finding by techers/tutors asleep between lessions.
if i may i feel the calkboard is both too small and low down (it whould be dificult to see it at the back of the class) her neck may need thicking as the gag between the chin and chest looks a little odd to my eye, it also seems odd we can not see her right foreleg.
the light is exelent no mistake but, judgeing by both couler and angle i can see the morning is already quite late (the colts and filly should be at there desks (erelivent if its a weekend)) acording to your vanishing lines its about...11am and yet the light rays are quite long, the lights "spot" (well opiste of shadow) whould be closer to the window or if you ment earlyer ther whould be a bigger arch. as i wonder where the desks shadow is on the floor and the light glare on the floor. no mistake the light streacks at the frame and side are genius. what is the relfectsion of the window doing this side of that ink well (the other effcts on it look nice tho.) the background out the window looks a bit fuzzy (but then this chould just be style) cheerile has smiles on her flowers. her mane may need a boost of couler. where are theaching draws (always some) and how whould a pony open thos draws anyway? the globes stand looks good but at that angle and range may be dimmer.
the curtins have exelent shadeing, the techure on the paper is exelent i think maybe adding "dust" in the light whould add some interesting depth.
none the less this is nothing short of brillant

Huh, I almost forgot replying to this, which I really was planning to do earlier. Thanks for your all commentsβit gives me a good new perspective on the image. Now on to your analysis.
The chalkboard may indeed look a bit small and low. I mostly tried to copy its dimensions from what's visible in the show, didn't feel the need to question its usefulness.
I wouldn't be surprised if the anatomy is slightly off in some places if you look closely. I had quite a bit of trouble finding the right shapes for her body. The few anatomical sketches I did helped, but the pose was still tricky. The detail of the neck under the chin may indeed not have come out exactly right. The right foreleg is supposed to rest on the deskβI don't think there's any way you could see it from this angle.
Then the light rays and the bright areas they cast. I have to admit that, other than constructing a vanishing point for them, I didn't to much else to figure out their exact behavior. I had a hard time determining where the light would hit the ground, and in the end I figured that the desk and Cheerilee herself mostly blocked the rays that would brighten any visible areas on the floor. I may very well be wrong though.
The short explanation for all possible lighting mistakes is: I cheated. If it all looks mostly convincing you can get away with quite a lot of nonsense. Same with the blurry windows. It's not really interesting what's happening outside, and it's easier to draw random smudges. Just imagine the windows are really dirty or something. And I don't even want to think about the logic how ponies would handle drawersβ¦
Anyway, after reading your comments, once again I realize how much there is to consider when constructing a scene. It's crazy.

indeed apologise likewise for my late reply (the temperture been murdarus so i have had trouble focusing).
doing some resurch (seeing some show stills) it seems the sence is quite true, but although the chalk board IS that impractical size, but IS higher, also the floor is covered with some straw(likely) or straches,
and finaly it is a shame the cute engraves at the top are out of sight.
true her foreleg chould be behind (i personly can not sleep with out one arm under my head.)
(no persific coment)
i, quite brave (i am more critacal of my own work so stuff takes a long time) maybe my personaility wants all lose ends tied neatly with out any "heavy" backgroud bluring eta hence i myself overanise my work but then with this the ones i work on and am serrius on i am ALWAYS satified with them (even if they will not win prizes)maybe i need to do some more "less serrise" works i chould attually help my skills.
yeah draws, handles...
and i thank you for you insight and analysis of my analysis agin it may help myself if i did stuff a little less serisusly acasionaly.

While I haven't had the privilege of all-nighters, I can only imagine they're something like this. I love the detailing and overall mood you set. She's beat, but I'll be good money she's happy the job is done and can't wait for her students to get to class.

Believe me, I know all too well what all-nighters are like, but at least my bed is only a short walk from my workspaces. (Yet it doesn't matter when one's really caught up in something. )
Her face is lovely even devoid of expression, completely relaxed, and actually I wonder if her open mouth means she's snoring a bit too. It must be awkward to half sprawl on the desk, but the ponies seem pretty soft along with all their other good traits (when they're not around Fluttershy, apparently). I can't help but notice the cutie mark is missing the smiles though.
The classroom is fantastic, both technically (proportions, lighting, etc.) but also having just enough items to make sure we know where she is, which is better than having a lot of clutter to distract from the mood. Sweet summer sunlight pours in and will soon rouse the teacher. Nice choice of elements, like the Celestia/alicorn woodcut, picture of some unicorn who's obviously important, the globe (but Equestria isn't marked!). Oh, and you didn't skimp on the iron work for the curtain rod and decoration, so you get super bonus points from me.
TLTR: It's terrific and you set the mood you wanted very beautifully.

I don't know? If the kids are supposed to be geniuses, why have they been working on the same bit of math for more than two years?

Hmmm, good point. Maybe Cheerilee should rethink her lesson plans a bitβmath is an important subject after all. She'd better focus on getting that covered rather than those namby-pamby subjects like cutie marks and what not.
