Description
If you didn't know Copic Markers is holding a contest (copicaward.com). It took me many a thumbnail drawing to figure out what to do and then figure out how to draw just with copic markers. Looking at some of the other entries, them peoples be using colored pencils, I sees it. Somebody else photographed their image with the tips of the markers and those WERE NOT copic markers ok! I was tempted to use my new ohuhus but I didnt! But I didn't feel so bad using a bit of colored mechanical pencil and a gelpen for highlights seeing the other cheaters! I did actually purchase Copic Opaque White but its in the mail..probably from Japan..and I drew too fast for the mail system. So regular gel pen it is but I tried using markers only. Im not a fan of making true lineart, so I made faux lineart with markers and that was interesting lol.The funny thing is is I went out and spent about 70$ on some new copic markers and the prize is free copic markers...I honestly think I probably at this point should just spend another 100$ on a full set or something..
The other reason I spent so much money on markers is I was using Strathmore MixedMedia paper and I thought my blue marker was dying (I mean they are like 5 years old) and theres a lot of blue..I panic'd and went to go look for a replacement and my local store didn't have that specific marker so I had to get a similar marker and when I got home I realized my markers werent dying, its just the paper absorbs everything and it gives that dying marker look. I probably will not use this paper ever again especially with as much marker juice that it sucked.
ANYWHO, photography wise..I tried to get it to look less saturated. In real life I tried really hard to get a poster-type, soft, crisp illustration. This is the best I could get to the original. Im pretty pleased in real life, just wish Id used a different paper.
I did reopen my twitter (slanedausy) and got a tiktok (dausypoo) and posted a few WIPs.

Luckily copics blend together pretty easy. So a gradient wasnt super difficult with 3 similar markers. What is really challenging is trying to get rid of all the marker streaks. Coming from a digital background I like silky smooth.

This is really beautiful! I love the expression on the tiger, it almost looks like it's falling through a sky/sea full of fish with the way the facial fur is sticking up.
In terms of photography, you should invest in a really good scanner instead for smaller pieces, that should help with keeping things crisp I think. I don't do traditional art, but I have seen people who do mention that they use scanners.
On another note, you should consider making this a sort of series, other big cats with other kinds of fish!
Good luck with the contest!

Thanks! I do actually own a scanner but it is a few years old now. The scanned version looked even more washed out.
