I never thought about the changelings actually being a completely different race from Equestrian ponies before the "corruption". My headcannon was that they were ponies, and the whole love potion incident from that story book occurred, where Chrysalis was the princess the love potion was used on.
This picture gives a new, and interesting perspective. I'm gonna have to adjust my headcannon a bit.

Such beautiful hair. And the look of her face reminds me of Celestia. The whole idea kind-of-sort-of makes me think Snow Elves-Falmer from Skyrim: the way they used to be high and developed, but were turned into hideous monstrosities.
Great shading on her. Love the way the front is brighter due to it being closer to the light source. Oh, and the little future-changeling is quite adorable and nicely done, too!
And of course, good background here. those trees do look pleasant.
