The bee looks so fluffy here!!

When it was feeding the honey from your finger, could you feel its little proboscis?Β

Every time I've seeing a bee feeding in your gallery I imagine a 'lum lum' licking noise XD

Sometimes I can feel it -almost like a tiny kitten licking my finger.

That's so cute!

I don't know all that much about Bees but it appears that these ones at least don't have stingers? Or I guess you are just so great working with them that they never feel threatened?

dalantech In reply to Doodlebotbop [2014-09-01 16:07:03 +0000 UTC]

The bee in that image is a female worker bee, and she does have a stinger. But I'm not doing anything threatening, so she's not going to sting me. I guess it really depends on how aggressive the insect is.

Have you ever been stung in the quest of photographing bees?

Twice, during the same photo session (was shooting honeybees on their comb).

Eeks! I've never been stung but it sounds like it hurts!!

I was harvesting our lavender today and there were two bees trying to get at the blooms that still remained. One landed in the bunch I was holding and I was all 'hey there little guy, sorry for confusing you!' and I thought about your photos of the bees.Β

I actually enticed it to land on my finger. Some bees are very "cold" and they had figured out that I was the one that had the honey, so working with them wasn't too bad.Β

That little guy is so cute! I love bees and when they land on me they never sting. I've also hand fed them and held them. They're so soft and it really tickles when they decide to lick under your finger nails. As long as your gentle with them and respect them they'll be gentle back.

The little dot on its.... Um, forehead.
Is that an eye?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dalantech In reply to Winterous [2012-07-11 06:30:43 +0000 UTC]

It's a light sensor, and there are three of them in a triangular pattern (the other two are hidden by the hair and the angle). When a predator casts a shadow over the bee the bee can tell what direction the predator is coming from and try to move out of the way. Many insects have those sensors, and I've just recently learned that if I rock back and forth while trying to get close to them I stand a better chance, since they are hard wired to ignore the motion of trees and grass that are being moved by the wind.

Risto0 In reply to dalantech [2012-07-11 11:20:28 +0000 UTC]

Wow, a light sensor. I thought that only my camera has such thing I've never heard of light sensor on insects before. I have a picture of bee or hornet and I thought that these are all its eyes, multiple eyes like spiders have. I think my bee/wasp has 4 eyes and 4 light sensors, despite of 8 eyes.
Thanks for the interesting information, a little smarter again
