Description
The tricky part, when shooting insect pairs like these Carpenter Ants, is getting both of their leading eyes in focus.Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (3x) + a diffused MT-24EX. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.
Technique: I put some 2:1 sugar syrup around the edge of an upside down plastic plate in an area where there were a lot of foraging Carpenter Ants.

I love ants and being able to see them close up like this is always great. Awesome capture man!

All of my insect macro is hand held -I don't own a tripod. But I've been shooting macro for nine years.

99.9% of the time I shoot hand held but generally also I will prop the lens on a solid surface. Β I have a tremor that only gets worse of I try to quell it. Β I also recently realized that I hold my breath when I shoot... Β lol
Your work is impressive!

Thanks! I also try to rest the lens on something, and sometimes that's my left hand while I'm holding onto the stem or flower the subject is on. I do shoot free hand, but only up to 2x with the EF-S 60mm and extension tubes (the MP-E 65mm is too heavy).Β

I have a tripod but it is so awkward taking it out in the field! And so some of my images suffer. I shoot almost solely with my EF_S 60mm and ringlight which btw are excellent for portraiture also.
