Description Oh look, it's not another photo of a bee... Oh, wait...   This crab Spider has been hunting in my Lavender and Mint for a while, and has even taken on some of the coloration of the Mint flowers that it caught a Honeybee in.

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens with 37mm of extension + a diffused MT-24EX (+1/3 FEC) with head "A" set as the key and head "B" as the fill. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. Was shooting free hand, and I find the EF-S 60mm easier to control because it's lighter than the MP-E 65nn. Also I wanted both spider and bee filling in the frame, so I had to shoot with a lens that could go below life size (this shot is roughly half life size).

An action shot! *clap, clap, clap*

Some of the crab spiders here take on a bright yellow color to match our bright yellow day-lilies in which they sit and wait for pollinator to show up.

I wonder if anyone has ever looked into how exactly some spiders can change their colors, or match their colors, to their surroundings.

The crab spider in that shot, after a few days on a yellow flower, will turn yellow. If you look closely it has picked up some of the purple from the mint flowers.

I wonder what the mechanism is exactly for their color change.

Very nice. Vicious and beautiful at once. So many little dramas play out around us every day, entire worlds existing in our backyards.

Lots of stuff happening all around us that we are just not equipped to see.

Crab spiders are amazing
they can change their colours adjusting them to their current surrounding!
and because of that they are harder to find than other spiders
I caught him just once when I was shooting...
and truth to be told, I noticed his victim, not him at first xD
Great capture!

That's normally how I find them -I see an insect at an odd angle and then I see the spider holding it.

"and has even taken on some of the coloration of the Mint flowers"

You could say it is in "mint condition"...

Woah!  That is a really fantastic capture!  That must have happened lightning quick, so good on you for getting such a great and clear shot.  It's amazing how warm and calming and sweet the colors and tones of this photo are, all the while the subject matter being a sudden and violent bee murder.  Nice!

Every time the flash fired the spider moved -made me work for that shot. Glad you like the light -I've spent a lot of time building the diffusers for my flash.

You and that spider must have some history.  She's gorgeous.  I'm curious, if you don't mind me asking -- in what part of the country do you live?  It's not shocking that I don't see a fraction of these cool creatures where I live in Hawaii but I didn't even know many of them could be found in the states.

I'm in Italy, but crab spiders are all over the planet. You have these in Hawaii: www.google.it/search?q=crab+sp…

Italy?  Wow, your DA front page says US!  I was way off.  Yes, we have crab spiders, but you never see them on my island, to be honest, nor the happyface spider of local fame.  Those guys seem to prefer the quiet life of Maui or Big Island.  I only ever get those gigantic cane spiders that are as big as my hand.  I like them much better from a distance than above my bed in the middle of the night.
