Description Technique: I found this European Wool carder bee snoozing on a Lavender stalk before sunset and woke up early the next morning to photograph it. I placed an artificial flower in the background to keep it from being black. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 with highlight tone priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (2x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering with -1 2/3 FEC).

Thanks

There's simple light sensors that most insects have, and they use them to avoid predators (or photographers ).

Awesome. Are those actual eyes in the top of its head?

The three eyes at the top of the bee’s headΒ are called ocelliΒ . These don’t see images but can detect Β changes in light. The ocelli help bees escape danger because ifΒ something is swooping down to eat them, the shadow created by the predator alerts the bee that something is wrong.Β

Holy macro mother of cthulhu. I don't think I've seen that much detail before.

How did you do this?!

dalantech In reply to wright867 [2016-07-15 08:12:18 +0000 UTC]

I found the bee early in the morning while it was still lethargic, cut the Lavender stem, and I set an artificial flower on my pick-nick table and used it as a back ground. Then while holding on to the stem with my left index finger and thumb I rested the lens on that same had to help keep the scene steady. What little motion was left was frozen by the flash.

That's awesome! My camera has a problem with focusing when something is right in front of it.

All of my macro work is with manual focus, either because the lens is manual only or because the depth is so thin.Β
