Are you using tubes or a lens like the Canon MP-E 65mm?

Great lens for a studio set up not so much for outdoors. Which do you use?

I have a Tamron 70-300 macro zoom on a T4i== an economic compromise. Has limits, but within those limits can take good photos. I've considered all the Canon macros but am waiting for when I have a secondΒ camera body, probably a T6s. The Tamron lens can be disappointing, it does not match up with Canon perfectly andΒ extenders won't allow auto focus.

Thanks, Ive been looking for a walk around lens since things are getting more active. Having a 70-300 sounds good, could do some bird photography as well when Im out. Id be keeping the mp-e so wouldn't need tubes as well. I'll have a look into the lens mate and check prices. Cheers for the info

I think it is too short for birds. That's why I have so few. Both Sigma and Tamron make one, but they both focus at infinity just before the infinity stops. Infinity isn't infinity, which makes manual mode aggravating. Neither are image stabilized. I'm considering the Nikon P900. This brings up a new set of problems, such as it only shoots jpeg, and it is only 16 mega-pixels. But it has greater range, the equivalent of 2000mm.
If it wasn't for the money it would be easy to experiment and see what works best.

Yeah I see what you mean. I have a second hand camera shop near me so I might see if they have one in I could play with. I was originally leaning towards the canon 100mm macro but Im in no rush. It will be about a month before I could afford one so Ive got plenty of time to research what will fit my needs. Thanks again for your help myekeh its very much appreciated.Β
