There is one thing this game taught me.
You have a choice to give up and go hollow or continue and reach the end.
Linking the flame is to me just a way to restart what you failed and try again, going a alternate course.
Still, seeing solaire linking the flame still hurts, I would have cried if there was a boss wearing his armor.

To be fair in dark souls 3 choosing to link the fire does nothing, you fail to burn up like the ds1 character and just continue to be unkindled. And as fromsoft said, an unkindled is an undead who has failed to link the fire, unfit to become cinder.
so the other endings are proper endings.
