It's not only name change...
United Systems of Janus is, in most aspects, is a new country.
After the Third World War and introduction of hyperspace travel NASA founded first research station on Earth-like planet called Washington (Janus system; Columbus cluster; Outer arm).
United States lost the EndWar Tournament (a specially organized match, actually - winner takes Earth (scorched, worked-out - but human's homeworld) for himself, loosers were cast into Exodus on brand new Earth-like planets. Tournament was organised when world leaders faced critical depletion of Earth's resources), and NASA's research station was turned into new home for those Americans, who didn't want to become Russians. On the first day of the Exodus, US Government self-dissolved, transmitting it's functions to the Admiral's Board of Exodus Fleet. Some ships broke off the main fleet during hyperspace storms and navigation issues, so there are much more than one human country with US origin... Nut USJ became the greatest of them.
Later Janus (known as Janus Respublic) united with New-Ottawa and Cardenas (closest human colonies) to form United Systems of Janus with capital called Washington-City (planet Washington; Janus system). For now (3050th a.d.) USJ includes 95 system states and controls large portion of Outer arm of our galaxy.

Age of Star setting (as well as Age of Atom, Age of Dragon etc) were initially designed for PnP RPG and literature
