Description Well I know it's been a while since I've uploaded anything here. I've been having some trouble digitizing my large painting work from second semester and am finally trying my hand at photographing my own work...I know it's not ideal, but bear with me. This is a huge fully-oil painting (20"x30") that I actually did around Thanksgiving of last year. It was intended to be a book-cover format for the Dragonriders of Pern series, a personal favorite of mine. I had the honor of meeting Todd and Anne McCaffrey in California a while back, and Todd and I had had a discussion about how the Pern dragons were originally intended to be more bovine than reptilian in structure. I did this with that comment in mind.

Ignoring that it is a gold breathing fire - the design along a bovine structure is really impressive.

The Pern series is one of my most favorite to read. I really like your take on the dragons and am very jealous that you met Todd and Anne McCaffrey. Great job.

Purely epic, i personally like the more reptillian look that we normally see, but this is a really cool picture of what they would look like by that comment

I love the picture and am a very big fan of the books myself...one problem with it is that I'M looking at it! and I'm all for 'nit pick details' but ignore my stupid self, it's lovely! wish I could draw even half as well as you!

Excellent. I never liked the look of the dragons on the Pern covers, even though they were pretty good books. The bovine look is unique and doesn't take away from the fierceness, dragon-ness of the dragons. I think I prefer them this way.

Well, art is so amazing, but...
It's a gold dragon. The queens aren't smoke threads .

yea queens dont chew firestone but they have the flamethrowers attached so they can still fight threads.

That's pretty amazing. Bovine dragons ftw. I like how you made them clearly bovine without turning them into cows with wings or anything; they're still dragons in structure. Point is, I like this interpretation, and I wonder what made them change their mind about them being reptilian instead.

Wow, this is.. amazing. I'm an avid fan of the Pern series, and I had actually started roleplaying in a Pern setting. Although, there is one small thing I am curious about.

Since I assume this is a gold/queen (compared to the slightly more earth-toned dragon below it), I thought it was set that most golds/queens do not fly in Thread battles, because if they were fed the firestone, they would become infertile?

Excerpt from wikipedia's Pern article, section 'Firestone': "Firestone is believed to render female dragons sterile, thus requiring queen dragons to use flamethrowers when fighting Thread."

Your dragons have great form! The dragons on the covers of my copies of the books look, actually, more like insects, which is weird... With the multi-faceted eyes, they look like compound eyes of bugs.

First it is drop dead gorgous, but that can't be Lessa or any of the queens because Queens don't breath fire.

Heh, I've loved the Dragonriders of Pern since I was little...I blame my grandfather.

The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern is also a good book (I really was obsessed.) But it also talks about how the dragons didn't have horns, fleshy knobs on their heads that somehow were thought to aid with their telepathy.

The wings here just strike me as too small...especially from the view of the back of the wing on the foremost dragon.

Given how muscular the dragons are here...it makes me curious as to what the whers would look like, given their smaller wings and bulkier bodies.

I'm a little confused to as the type of dragon the woman is riding. Because women didn't impress bronze dragons and I would guess by the color this is a gold. But the golds never chewed firestone because they were the only dragons who laid eggs and the firestone messed that whole process up.
