Excellent.Β  I really like this concept of Jaxom above all others.Β  Sort of a 20-something Joe Flanigan Β  Ruth looks a proper sci-fi sort of dragon, aka evolved to it's environment rather than a creature of fantasy.

To pitch into the Horns argument, those aren't horns.Β  They are "head knobs" which are described as the visible part of a dragonet's hearing apparatus (Dragonsdawn).Β  Dragons are mentioned as having them many times throughout the books, including a moment where a dragonrider gives his dragon's "head knobs" a playful tug.Β  They are physically demonstrated in Anne's "Dragon Lover's Guide to Pern" as looking very much like flesh covered Giraffe's horns.Β  Thicker in circumference than shown here.Β  The drawings in that book were under Anne's direct guidance.Β  Cheers.

I absolutely LOVE this piece! Β I think the 'horn' is just fine. Β I've read the series (excluding some of the newer stuff by McCaffrey's son, Todd), front to back I don't know how many times, and I always pictured them with some nubbin's of some sort on the top/sideish of their heads that aren't really horns, but are bigger than a bump, because in a few places it's mentioned that they like to have their head ridges scratched/itched/rubbed. Β I admit, though, that I often see them as they were portrayed by Wheelan (I can't help it... he has done some of the most beautiful book covers I've ever seen).

Absolutely beautiful. Just as I pictured them in my mind while reading their story.

This is gorgeuos, love the markings on Ruth, and to everyone who is saying things about the horns, OH WELL. There was never a direct description in the books, and the cover art is based on the description and the artists imagination. I have seen so many different interpretions of McCaffrey's description, they all have the basic descriptors, and they are all amazing. The only thing we really know is that the heads are wedge shaped, the have neck ridges/spikes, their eyes are faceted, that they burped up rock ash after eating firestone, oh and that they had two sets of legs and one set of wings with a tail. I might have missed a few things, but those are some of the main features.

By the way, this is amazing, and wonderful. You can see the veins in Ruth's wings, which is amazingly done. I also like the Weyr(hold?) in the background. All in all, this is quite stunning and beaeutiful.

This is beyond wonderful.Β  This is a great deal like what I always imagined Jaxom to look (or even a young F'lar), and I like that Ruth isn't purely white.Β  So fantasic.

dragon looks a bit off, but nothing major.Β  it just looks a little... harmless I guess.Β  Don't get me wrong I know that that's basically the dragons in pern; gentle giants, but... well they didn't LOOK like gentle giants.

Still a giant (by earth standards) flying, fire breathing monstrosity. Plus pernese dragons don't have giraffe horns

This is pretty late, but they do in fact have giraffe-looking horns. :/ sorry to burst your bubble. Though I guess if someone really wants to they can headcanon Pern dragons to have different horns.

I don't remember seeing giraffe horns on ramoth on the cover to dragon flight.

taptuk In reply to dragonrider364 [2014-07-29 23:00:32 +0000 UTC]

That's true. Remember that the dragons on the various covers differ GREATLY depending on the artist, though--as opposed to Michael Whelan's art (whose Dragonflight cover is the one I believe you're referring to), it's pretty common to draw them with fleshy protuberances which are technically part of the skull and thus some sort of horns. I think it's up to the fan-artist/writer, so...open to interpretation.

dragonrider364 In reply to taptuk [2014-07-29 23:29:50 +0000 UTC]

That being said if it was a horn it'd be made up of bone, hair or keratin, so if they're fleshy then they technically aren't horns

taptuk In reply to dragonrider364 [2014-07-30 02:53:54 +0000 UTC]

You're right there. I just meant that they're usually portrayed as being covered with dragonhide, rather than the outright horns classical dragons may have. I always imagined them as somewhere between horns and bulbs/giraffe "horns."

dragonrider364 In reply to Creature218 [2014-04-18 19:31:09 +0000 UTC]

It's cover, not it's cover art. The dragons in eragon speak telepathically, do they have giraffe horns? No.

dragonrider364 In reply to Creature218 [2014-04-18 20:54:59 +0000 UTC]

Point being that a pernese dragon has never had giraffe horns. And they have nothing to do with telepathy. They're horns, not antennae.

Interesting detail about Eragonese dragons, but basically P.E.R.N.'s dragons communicate the same way, they don't speak, but a human 'hears' what they say.
