Submitted this as part of CGTrader.com's 3D Sci Fi Competition. Don't know if I'll win or not, but decided to put an image up here anyway, to show what I've been up to.

I think the effect of inertia on creativity cannot be discounted. When the sci-fi genre came into its own in the 40s and 50s, plastic and metal were considered futuristic materials. Now, they're still used to this day because that's what people associate with sci-fi.

Yes, but on a real starship the interior would need to be as earth-like as possible. Or perhaps interior design would be different depending on what section you're in.

An actual, proper starship would need to have some kind of pub, maybe there would be the earthy/natural environment and all other sections would have more utilitarian designs.
