Description Submitted this as part of CGTrader.com's 3D Sci Fi Competition.  Don't know if I'll win or not, but decided to put an image up here anyway, to show what I've been up to.

This is excellent work but it got me wondering: why is it that every starship interior, save for Doctor Who, use plastic and metal?

I think the effect of inertia on creativity cannot be discounted.  When the sci-fi genre came into its own in the 40s and 50s, plastic and metal were considered futuristic materials.  Now, they're still used to this day because that's what people associate with sci-fi.

Yes, but on a real starship the interior would need to be as earth-like as possible.  Or perhaps interior design would be different depending on what section you're in.

Interesting point...I was just thinking how beautiful this design is...and how hard it would be to live with everyday!

An actual, proper starship would need to have some kind of pub, maybe there would be the earthy/natural environment and all other sections would have more utilitarian designs.

Fantastic and stunning piece of work, must get back to doing some art, but 3d printing and drawing is taking up way to much time, again lovely work Dan

Thanks! I'm glad you like it!

And your illustrations are quite nice, so I would recommend keeping up with doing what you're doing, if you're having fun.

Fantastic render, Dan. As always, your work continues to inspire and amaze!

DanBrownCGI In reply to Mvortex6 [2014-02-23 18:31:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, B!

It was around 1800 samples and took about half an hour to render out.

Pssh, you and your really awesome and decked out computer, lol

I get the feeling that if I tried that on mine, the render wouldn't be ready before I turn 50!

Hehe.  Actually, BlenderGuru had some tricks on speeding up render times.  Might want to take a look if you haven't.
