Description
Oleander
<< Previous l First l Next >>
Oleander wasn't really one for religious practices; he didn't understand why his mother was such a devout Luxhallowan or why she would believe so strongly in something he saw as such a tall tale. Though, if there were one good thing that came out of Luxhallow, it was the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the ceremonies he attended once a week. He often found himself dozing off during the middle of service, but forced himself to keep awake under the watchful eyes of Mother. The two of them always sat near the back of the room, which didn't make it any easier for Oleander considering how out of sight they were.
This week, as per usual, Oleander could feel his eyelids growing heavy as Bearer Allanor preached to the congregation. He furrowed his brows, attempting to concentrate on what the man was saying, but found it to be hopeless. He simply wasn't interested - an obvious fact considering it was Mother who dragged him there every week. Just as Oleander was about to resign to his fate, Bearer Allanor ended his speech and returned to his seat. A group of wynglings then stood from the foremost benches and walked in front of the altar. Though there were usually only the four choir siblings to sing, it appeared as though a new wyngling had joined their ranks this week. Oleander immediately noticed him as he stood out, with his striking red colouration breaking the beige uniformity. The wyngling had wide, amber eyes, and instead of donning the usual scarlet cape wore a hat similar to Bearer Allanor's. Had the Bearer taken on a new apprentice?
The four siblings began to sing while the red wyngling kept his eyes focused solely on the songbook in his claws. It was a lovely synchronized song, flowing with many drawn out notes. Normally this would act as a lullaby for Oleander, but instead he found himself watching attentively which was unusual for him. As the first verse was completed, the red wyngling finally opened his mouth and began to sing in what Oleander could only describe as one of the most beautiful voices he'd ever heard. It was strong and clear, at the same time reminding him of the chiming of bells. Melodious and sweet, and so very different from the way he sang. Oleander couldn't turn away. The majority of the audience seemed equally captivated with the new child's voice, and Bearer Allanor was smiling with approval.
Once the song had finished, Oleander found himself unable to pay attention to anything else except for the mysterious red wyngling in the front row. And when it was time to leave, he felt himself longing to return the next week if only to hear that voice again.
He did not notice the wry smile Mother had been giving him.

Wow, thank you so much! Also, I noticed I accidentally submitted this to the retired 6.0 general art folder, would it be too much trouble to ask for it to be moved to the new one? <3
