Description
If there's one thing I've learned about Blender, it's that it eats up all my damn time. It all started with me wanting to make a few props for a render, and then turned into a "what if I just do the render in Blender?" You know what happens? This happens. I lost all sense of time. Five days of experimenting, running my GPU to death, trying and failing, trying and failing, nearly crying when I figured out the solution to a problem, and crashing Blender at least ten times (as well as locking up my computer). I didn't even think about rendering in layers to make my life easier. Why make things easy for myself? The male model, his clothing, the book he's holding, and the cat were imported as OBJ files from Daz. The rest, including his glasses, were all modeled in Blender. That was a lot of modeling. 40+ objects modeled. It wasn't all bad. I used images on planes for a few items (leaves and webs for example) to help reduce the amount of time needed to model.
There were a few things I couldn't achieve in Blender without letting this sucker render for more than a day, so I did some adjusting in Pixeluvo and Photoshop. I used one of the quick filters in Pixeluvo, adjusted the glow around the candle and the light filtering through the window (as my original volumetrics were too grainy or looked like powder smudges after using the denoiser), and used reduced jpeg pixelation to get rid of some fireflies. I also added some filler to the bottles, so not all of them were empty. A few were textured or filled in Blender. I then when over to Photoshop to add some dust motes to the volumetric light.
Fun fact: The half orb on top of the bookcase is something I made the first time I used the sculpting brushes. That was very early this year. I cut it in half and made the weird little glowing orb. Kind of reminds me of a brain.
This took about 4 hours to render in Cycles. Once it was finished, I squealed. I think it was worth all the stress. Probably.
