Monday morning. It had been 3 days since Ms. Featherstone gave Mary her new upstairs neighbors. That first night, Mary hadn't been able to sleep a wink. The creepy crawly feeling of the little people in her hair was too novel of a sensation to ignore. She had spent the weekend busying herself with mindless tasks, or distracting herself with her phone & computer while shut up in her room.

Her parents hadn't seen her yet. She knew they would be concerned about her floor-length hair being cut, and wasn't sure they would miss the sight of the brownies in what was gathered up of the rest of her tresses. Mary had noticed, though, that during the daylight hours, the little folk seemed to be dormant, tucked away in her swept-up locks, out of sight. On Sunday night as she lay down to sleep, she could feel new activity up there. She had gotten so little sleep the previous two nights that she quickly dozed, despite their renewed labor in whatever it was they were doing to her hair.

As she woke today, she seemed to feel different. Energized. She snuck into the bathroom to get a glimpse of herself. Already the mass of hair on her head had noticeably increased. It was working! Her hair was slowly growing, and the brownies had abandoned the simple bun in favor of a more, well...interesting look. Although, with her previous floor-length hair, she had had to make some interesting choices with it herself when putting it up. She might actually pull off a day at school without any weirder looks from her classmates than normal...

She gingerly stroked her new updo. Ms. Featherstone had been right, it was clean and glossy as if she had just washed and dried it. Maybe a few weeks of brownies crawling through her hair wouldn't be as awful as she had thought...
