"Isn't this exciting?!" Julie exclaimed as she walked briskly alongside Megan. Julie's shorter legs had to move faster to keep up with her taller cheerleader friend."I...guess?" Megan smirked, eyeing Julie as they strode down the hall together. "After all you've been through, aren't you a little--"
"TERRIFIED?" Julie answered for her. Her glossy brown braids bounced around her knees as the girls approached their new first period classroom. "Um yeah! Demons, magic, danger! Who wouldn't be?! But still!"
Megan brushed a stray lock of blonde hair from her eyes. Her loose hair caressed the back of her calves as it came to an end inches from the floor. "It is all pretty crazy...but yeah. Worth it!" She giggled as the two of them entered the room.
"Welcome!" Cheryl greeted them with a smile as she stood in the sparsely furnished classroom. Fewer than ten desks were spaced in a semi-circle around the room. Mary and Dawn had already arrived and were seated. Hellos were exchanged, and Julie and Megan sat next to each other as the bell rang.
Cheryl stood in front of the girls, appearing equal parts elated and nervous. Her immaculate chocolaty mane was gathered up in as professional a bun atop her head as twelve feet of hair allowed, held in place with a pair of pencils. Julie speculated that she probably wasn't the only one who, while as fetching as Cheryl's piled hair was, hoped there would be a point during class when those pencils would come out, and her powerful locks would cascade to the floor. For now, though, it was just as well that Cheryl's was less of a distraction done up, as the woman began to speak.
"Hello, girls," Cheryl beamed a smile at them. The four of them couldn't help but smile back. Cheryl's very presence exuded a powerful confidence. Dressed primly in a sweater and skirt, but without the formal, reserved demeanor of their principal. It just seemed impossible not to like her. To not want to please her. "Time will tell if I am cut out for teaching, but I'm sure willing to give it a go."
Cheryl locked eyes with all four girls in turn. "You've all been through a harrowing few weeks," she stated as her expression grew serious. "None more than Ms. Featherstone." The girls remembered the toll their recent adventures had had on their principal. "You know how serious your duties are, the danger that you face." Julie began to shrink in her chair. Cheryl took a step closer to the girls. "But I know you are up to the task. I can see the strength you possess!" The girls all shot looks at each other, determination rising in their eyes.
"I'm here to help you learn to protect and defend each other, and this dimension," Cheryl continued. "And, since technically we have to keep a cover as a hairstyling class associated with the local beauty college," she smirked, "maybe we'll get to have a bit of fun, too."
Julie giggled. Having lived all of her life with short-cropped hair, she was jubilant at the prospect of learning how to style and tend to her new luxurious knee-length tresses.
"Now," Cheryl stood back, arms behind her back, appearing poised as she went into teacher mode. "One of the greatest advantages we have over beings of darkness is the ability to connect with each other. The monsters and destroyers intent on invading this dimension are many, and they are powerful, but they are ultimately out for themselves, no matter what promises they may make with each other or with you. They see love and connection as weaknesses; yet they can't fully concentrate on the battle in front of them because they've got one eye watching out to see who's trying to stab them in the back or eat them."
Dawn piped up. "So, how do we actually use that advantage? Mary and Julie were both attacked while they were out of our sight. We can't be with each other 24/7, can we?"
"Good question, Dawn!" Cheryl responded. "While the bond you've been able to create will indeed help you, I'd prefer to give you all a magical boost in your ability to connect."
Cheryl reached up, and, as Julie had hoped, snatched the two pencils from atop her massive bun. The girls stared in awe as Cheryl's glorious hair cascaded downwards. Cheryl even swirled a tad, giggling at the added effect of movement to her tresses.
Cheryl's fingers deftly moved to her scalp, separating her hair into four sections. "Each of you, please let your hair loose, and come closer." The girls needed no encouragement as they leapt up onto their feet. Megan and Dawn's hair already being loose, Dawn helped Mary unweave her single braid, while Megan aided Julie in undoing her twin braids. Soon each girl stood admiring one another. Mary was the only one besides Cheryl whose hair was longer than she was tall; she had partially draped her stunning red mane over one of her arms.
"Now," Cheryl directed each girl, "Each of you take a lock, and watch closely." They did so, the four of them standing in a circle around Cheryl. The woman then instructed each of them to braid their own hair into their respective lock handed to them by Cheryl. She demonstrated with Mary's hair, it being the longest. The girls followed suit, eagerly savoring the feel of Cheryl's glossy luster in their fingers as they weaved it into their own hair. In a matter of minutes, they stood around Cheryl as if she was a maypole, ready to be wrapped up in the soft, multi-colored braids.
Megan giggled. "I would totally Instagram this if we didn't look so ridiculous." The others laughed around her. They were definitely a sight to behold.
Dawn smirked. "I really hope there's a spell involved here. I don't think I can make it to the rest of my classes if I'm supposed to drag you all along with me."
"This shouldn't take long," Cheryl reassured her, returning her smirk. "Now, this may take a few tries over several class sessions, but my first spell will be to help you alert each other when one of us is in trouble."
"This I gotta see," Megan said. She would have given anything to have been able to help Julie before Todd had taken so much of her hair.
"While your hair itself is not alive," Cheryl continued, "the magic infused with it is connected to your life force, as you well know." They did know. Megan was not the only one who wondered exactly by how many years Julie's life span had been shortened, with the amount of life force the demon Typhon had stolen from her via the curse in her hair.
Cheryl's hand went immediately to her necklace, caressing it as she whispered an incantation. Immediately a warm sensation engulfed the girls' scalps, tingling as they sensed magic coursing through their locks. Cheryl's voice became low, almost a whisper. "The more time we spend in this spell, our hair woven together, intermingling our magic, our life forces will become more familiar. They will form a connection to each other, beyond normal human comprehension. When one of us is in danger, the others will know."
"I actually do hope this takes a while," Dawn relented, her eyes closed. "This feels better than any scalp massage I've ever had."
Unfortunately, the sound of the classroom door swinging open, banging against the wall, jolted everyone, the spell vanishing. The girls turned their heads as best they could, their movements somewhat hindered by the braids they'd created.
In the doorway stood a girl. Her pink dress, heels and hair ribbon contrasted against the drab brownish-grey of the classroom wall. It took only a moment for everyone to notice the magnificent ombre curls tickling her ankles. Had Ms. Featherstone added a new vessel without telling them?
The shocked look on the girl's face told them no, she was not prepared for the scene in front of her. They must have looked ridiculous, their hair woven together, standing in a circle around Cheryl.
"What in the actual FUCK?" Vivian exclaimed. She looked at the schedule in her hand, then back at the group of girls in front of her. What in the hell was this? She remembered the anger in her father's eyes last night as he demanded her compliance, the only thing keeping her from bolting from this weirdness.
The girls and Cheryl quickly undid the braids that held them together. "Um, hello, I don't believe we've met," Cheryl tried to keep her composure as her fingers worked quickly. "This was just a...uh, you know, get-to-know-you game."
Vivian looked at her schedule again, then at Cheryl. "Well, I'm not sure I want to get to know any of you, then." The thought of these unknown girls' hands groping her tresses made her ill. Who knew where these people had been? She did a double-take then, now noticing the spectacle before her. The five people in front of her all had hair that rivaled her own in beauty and glory. Used to being the best-tressed in the room her whole life, she was shaken.
What in the hell had she been dropped into?

Hello, everyone! I'm back. I missed you. I have a computer now! It's a gift from a family member and is pretty awful, but I think it will do what I need it to so i can continue updating my DangerCurls story. I'm pretty rusty, so I started with a simple image to get me back into the swing of things. Hope you like!
