Hesperus, the Evening Star was inspired by Pre-Raphaelite imagery, and mimics the subject matter of Flaming June by Lord Frederick Leighton. Hesperus was originally intended to be more a study of drapery and the figure than a finished painting in itself. In my experience, it is best to have a reference when portraying drapery rather than making it up - the cloth never seems to fall where one would suspect that it should! I chose the name Hesperus based on the mythology of Greek deities and chose to name her after the Goddess of the Evening Star.Hesperus, The Evening Star

I'm always amazed at the spectacular work people can do with acrylics (I'm an oil girl my self)... your use of light and color theory is fantastic. The pose is perfect, the face serene. It holds massive amounts of visual interest, well done.

They do have some contests and what not, but I don't know how many are specifically for painting (if that's what you're looking for).
