Description An old freighter, pulled out of service and waiting for an uncertain future in the harbor basin of Glückstadt, Germany.
A lot of shipping companies went bankrupt in the last years. Some vessels belonging to those companies were just pulled into ports where they wouldn't be in the way. Either to get a new owner or to get scrapped. This one doesn't look like it's going to see the ocean again though.

What a shame. I wonder if it would be cheaper to retro-fit and re-purpose a vessel like this or just build a new one entirely.

Many of these old ships end up finishing their lives carrying corrosive cargos such as salt. The owners are usually very dodgy and the unlucky crew who happen to be on it at the time the authorities decide that it is no longer seaworthy are stuck with no money and no papers to enter the country. Global shipping is a very dodgy business.

Interesting. I didn't know the thing with the salt. In this case the situation is not as horrible for the crew as it could be. They are or were foreigners, yes. But the shipping company was german, even though they sailed under some african flag. So when the company went bankrupt and the ship stayed in Germany, the (also German) ship insurance keeps on paying them their salary. It's all in the hand of the Liquidator now. If this ship would be somewhere in Africa, they would probably let them rot, but it's not exactly good publicity for this to happen in a country like Germany. It's one of the few occasions where an insurance really pays in time. Either that or they feel the Hamburger Port Authority breathing down their neck.
