Thank you It's not painted it's just cast in bronze powder then polished up! It was cast in fibreglass.

Ah the good old powder tick, I've seen it work so well in that past and this is another one of those times // I've never cast in fibreglass thou, is it difficult to work with?

Sorry for the late reply! Casting in fibreglass is fine, you just need working space that can get messy if need be, and it stinks too! Depending on what you cast, you can use different weights(thicknesses or gsm) of fibreglass matting. So if you were casting something that was relatively flat you can use thicker matting but if the object is has lots of detail or edges say, the thicker matting won't lay flat and you'll get air bubbles and other annoying problems. Let me know if you're going to cast something and I can talk you through it step by step if you like!

It'll be a while before I cast something in fiberglass, mostly cos I don't have the space and I''m working on foam armour at the moment so no fiberglass is need. . . althou I could cast the armour in fiberglass. . . but them I'll have to go out and buy some . . . of the problems of being a prop maker =]

Hey bro,
I love your work!
I have a question on the metal power. I used it for one of my masks but it was very hard to bring out the metal in the resin. Do you have any tips?

Thanks

Hey man, thank you very much
Can you remember how much metal powder you put into the mix? I usually do 3.5-5X the weight of metal powder to resin used. The more powder the brighter the finish and thicker the mix. Also, make sure you dust the mould with the metal powder before you put the mix in! Once it's cured gently expose the metal with fine wire wool. You don't want to be too heavy handed and go down into the mix or scratch the surface too deeply. Then use a polishing wheel if you have one. If not use some brasso and a cloth! Iron paste/ grate polish looks fantastic too Hope that helps man, keep me updated!

Oh man, thanks sooo much! this really helps.
You know how you mix 1 to 1 equal parts for the resin well i mixed one equal part of nickel powder. I had a very hard time getting the metal to be exposed. I also didn't dust the mold.

So do clear coat it when you are finished? I found that the clear coat killed the shine a bit because i used matte finish. Also i never used iron paste, is a type of polish? Thanks man for all your help, Your work is amazing! I will keep picking your brain from time to time if you don't mind.

Can't wait to see the finished Skyrim helmet which is looking so badass right now. Just got the game last night and i friggin love it.

Thanks again

You're welcome
I haven't coated anything i've done in the past, i quite like the way they age when left. There are various products designed to protect the metal that don't effect the shine though. Best place to look would be whoever supplies the metal powder.

Yeah, iron paste has a few names. I don't know what they call it in the states. It's a black paste with a metallic finish that you apply to a surface with a brush or cloth. You can work it into the various nooks and crannies for contrast or leave it on the surface for a longer period to have a more aged effect. It's something you need to experiment with to understand how you can apply it really. But it works great with metal powders! It's the first thing that popped into my head when i saw your nickel turkish mask.

How you getting on with Skyrim??

I buy from Smooth-On.com
Not sure what they have for clear coats.

I'll have to try the iron paste, right now i use shoe polish which seams to work pretty well. Where do you get your metal powder from? At Smooth-On is like $56.00 for a pound.
I tried dusting the mold with it and that worked out nicely but it looks more bronze than nickel. I guess thats where putting it into the resin will help. I'm just being cheap right now because i have to do six pieces of arm armor and it will just get way to expensive to pack each piece with metal powder. Thanks again for your help.

Skyrim just rocks, I have always been an elf both high and dark in the earlier games like Morrowind and Oblivian but this time I went with the Kajit. I like it so far.
I have it for the PC and there is a community for Skyrim where you can Download gamer made add-ons. I got the armor from the manga Berserk. You still have to make the armor but it looks so badass. in other Skyrim news i just got the dragon yell, Not to far into the game yet as you can see. Oh and i saw a picture of the mask you are sculpting in one of the loading screens. Looks awesome.

How you doin in Skyrim and who is this character of the mask your sculpting? What made you pick that character?

When i was studying i got it from a local supplier called Maragon:
[link] They don't stock nickel though, $56 still seems expenive man. The most expensive metal on Maragon is bronze at about £11 for 500g! Is nickel particularly expensive??

Wow,that's so weird it looked more like bronzeXD
Yeah costs can rocket so quickly! Hopefully you'll get so much interest in people wanting one that it'll cover your expenses

Your armour shots look amazing though, very impressed Looking forward to seeing the finished thing!

Morrowind is awesome! Spent more hours on that than i'd like to admitXD Yeah, my housemate plays it on PC, his PC is pretty good too! Totally puts the graphics on my 360 to shame! Totally jealous you guys get to use MODs too. Keeps the game going so much longer!

I've pretty much finished Skyrim now, apart from the last bits of the dark brotherhood missions and all the stuff with the imperials/stormcloaks Been a great game!

You'll bump into Clavicus Vile soon enough, wouldn't want to spoil it for you! He's a Daedric prince I'm not sure what made me choose it as a project?? I just loved the design! As soon as i saw it and knew i had to build it

Yeah i guess nickle is expensive here or maybe its just the company i get it from. ill have to look around for better prices.

Yup on the first mask I made with the metal powder it just didn't come out correctly.
But i made a newer version based on our talk and It looks a lot more silver now. But as the days go by it loses its shine due to oxidation. So im going to have to do something about that soon before it looks all bronze again.

I love the dark brotherhoood missions! I had so much fun with them in Oblivian. I hope they are just as good or better in this one.
The other day i downloaded the armor from the anime/ manga berserk. who ever made it did a great job. so i've been sporting that for a while now.
Is there any way you can break down your arm or weapons to make metal ingots?
it would be awesome if you can do that.

I was talking to my bosses at work the other day about it and they said you can seal it with a clear laquer or jade oil! Haven't tried either i'm afraid but i'd be interested to try jade oil! Might not knock the metallic shine back as much as the laquer.
I think there are mods for that on the pc. My housemate uses skyrimnexus for mods and i'm sure he's got one like that! I'm playing it on the xbox so i can't do any cool stuff like that
