Wait, does this mean that we'll have to manually add the URLs in the artist's comments of deviations too? That would take forever!

You know what I just noticed... something has been bothering me and I couldn't quite put my finger... but now I think I know:
Everything is too big, too much 'in your face', it's hard to see the overview! I'm like... lost because I don't know where to look.
Anyone have that feeling, too?Β

"it's hard to see the overview"
It's interesting to see what Eclipse looks like in full.
It gives a different impression when you see the whole page laid out:

Been thinking the same for a long time. Think I'm quoting someone by saying that going through feedback or a gallery or anything for that matter feels like being hit by a brick in the face. Or more like bricks suddenly start raining all over >.< It's overwhelming to the point it feels emotionally exhausting to browse through the site. This is not how one wants to look at art.

*nods* This is very much the feeling I get too.
I really don't mind a 'cleaner page' with (smaller) thumbnails I can click to open (I usually open those in a separate tab) where things have a certain stability. It's maybe also that the images are almost seemingly nilly-willy fitted into a 'puzzle pattern' where some are bigger and others smaller, trying to fit as much as efficiently into one space. It's at the same time very uneasy to the eyes, or skim through for the brain.
Thanks for your view on this, too.

They made actual deviations themselves smaller though :/ Unless you click them, then they zoom in to an insane degree (unless you know how to scale your image to fit the new zoom). Would definitely submit a ticket about the scaling issues, I know I have.

Except in areas where there are a bunch of deviations, then they are so huge they no longer invite to click on the thumbnail to actually open them.... not to mention they are stuffed so close together as though they are pieces of wallpaper, you know the old classical type that people actually use to cover walls >.< The site is supposed to compliment art and present it nicely and invitingly, not stuff it like tomatoes in a cart. In proper art galleries people give space to individual paintings because this is how an artwork really does its impact. But not here. However, everywhere else space is vastly wasted, except for where it actually is needed.

lapis-lazuri In reply to LadySaltyBeard [2019-06-13 20:45:33 +0000 UTC]
I know what you meant and I agree. But I see the thumbnails as a huge issue as well. It's enough for me to see that some of my deviations sometimes have more favs than actual views.... that means people fav them without ever really opening them. That doesn't really feel right.

It's too much *in your face*, overwhelming and it makes artworks "fight" with each other. It looks like this to me: thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/newspa⦠- not like what an art gallery should be like.

LadySaltyBeard In reply to lapis-lazuri [2019-06-13 20:58:14 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, everything is way too close together for sure, and I personally dislike the gradient over the thumbnails when you hover over to click them. It just seems unnecessary.

Hi Dalena,
Thank you for letting me know Do you plan to add the current theme colour (not the arrangement) to the Eclipse as an option to choose from, like "retro theme"?
Or should I post this request/idea/suggestion firstly as a comment on its own, to see if someone agrees with it?

And I like the addition to the journals, getting more customization feels lovely ~ Thank you for the updates!

I'll comment this on every update until it happens. PLEASE let us remove the 'about me' on our profiles. Right about now that's the only thing I can think of that I strongly dislike. It's bulky and the fact people have to click it to read the full thing is obnoxious. People before couldn't even read simple comments on ones page ABOUT commenting you think they're going to click them to read it? Overall it takes up too much space on our profiles and it's awful to look at. //ps, anyone who wants to tell me to submit this to their 'real' feedback? i h a v e bncgshdgrtj//

Do you have any pics of the format of the "about me" section on the profiles in eclipse? I'd check it myself, I'm really nervous to use eclipse again, because last time it caused the site to crash on my computer. From what I hear is it's really inconvenient and some of the sections on it are weird, but I haven't actually seen it due to the aforementioned crash.

Discover: Why not focus on the smaller less known artists instead? You know, the ones that work their butts off and get no recognition or exposure yet have artwork just as beautiful and have been around for years as well? Why do you have the need to always constantly focus on popular/established artists? I looked through discover. None of your recommendations I'm interested in because they are ALREADY overly popular/established. I watch artists that I feel deserve to be watched and supported, or have similar interests or styles that I personally like. I make that decision, not the other way around. You're capable of making Eclipse and forcing it down our throats so it should be obvious that you're more than capable of focusing on smaller and unknown artists for once. Others deserve a chance, not the same people that always make the front page. Stop giving them pedestals.Β
I'm not sorry for being angry at this point, because for months now I've watched your team completely ignore our complaints (some of which areΒ Legitimate.Β Health. Concerns.)Β to focus ONLY on the maybe... 2%? positive comments. ItΒ shouldn't have to be so rare that you put your community first. Hell you even punish your users for unblocking somebody by forcing them to wait 48 hours to block again!
I won't feel sorry for DeviantART's downfall despite I've been around since 2004 or so. When you act like this and just destroy everything a lot of people have worked hard for over the years here, people will leave and you'll lose money. Not hard to predict.
Nobody asked for a whole new website. We just wanted an overhaul that fixes the terrible issues this website has.

Thanks for clarifying. I thought this could be the case, but as I wasn't seeing it I wasn't sure. I'm still seeing people in there that I'd rather not watch, though. It's half half. I hope this eventually focuses less on those highly ranked artists, and on artists I would rather watch that I might miss normally. Yes I do like the work of some of them, but I have preferences of my own.
I just really hope the staff pull through in listening to us and our concerns because that's all we want.Β

I think a lot of the popular artists might pay for that kind of thing maybe? Id assume that would be why they are advertising them? The average Joe artist may not be able to afford ads (kinda like how furaffinity allows ads paid for by the artist)Β
I do agree that they should take other opinions/concerns/comments into consideration since a lot of people actually have epilepsy and things that can be triggered by bright/strobe like art. The blackness of Eclipse makes me have migraines so if they can allow customization of the overall colorization of the site so its not pitch black with white/bright colored photos that would be great.Β
I wouldn't be surprised if DA eventually closed but i don't see that happening anytime soon, if you want to sell art I do suggest Furaffinity because they have a bigger consumer base than DA who focuses on "good/popular" artists.Β

Totally agreed!
By this, Its really difficult to grow as an artist when someone joins to DA! I understand the popular or established artist on the main page helps DA with the marketing, but as you say, it don't mean they should focus ALL the attention. There are several of really good artist that deserve more viewers than actually they have.
I have been on DA more than 10 years, and I still don't know how to get more viewers.
I hope DA staff can read your words.

It is, especially for new users too now who they automatically force onto Eclipse. It's utterly disgraceful.
I've seen those artists be on the front page for years and years, it truly is biased and unfair. As you said, they shouldn't have all the attention. I agree 100%. So many better artists, with stunning work, that go unnoticed for the same artists that already have made them money. They need to give it a rest.Β
Same here. I've worked hard to build up. It's very hard to do. >.<
Thank you! I doubt they will though. They ignore a lot of the main concerns, specifically health ones, which is alarming.Β
