Premium Members can now use Google Analytics to get meaningful insight about the traffic to their deviantART Profile! Using our new Google Analytics integration, you can access comprehensive statistics about your audience, traffic, and art.

Get Deeper Insight Into Your deviantART Traffic

By enabling the feature on your profile, you can now use Google Analytics to get a better grasp on the deviantART experience that you’ve created for your audience!

  • Understand what types of people are organically drawn to your work. Where do they live? How long are they on your page?
  • See the impact of the marketing you do outside of deviantART. When you share your deviantART work and links in other networks and sites, you’ll be able to track the traffic back to your Journals, Gallery, Profile, and much more!
  • Understand what your visitors are looking at when they’re on your Profile and even for how long! Sometimes visitor trends are unclear until you can see the bigger picture.
  • Evaluate the difference in attention you get for some types of work versus others.
  • See a direct correlation between your marketing activities to deviation submissions and spikes in traffic to your Journals, artwork, or Profile pages.

Learn More About Your Audience Knowing who is engaging with your Profile can help you make decisions about where to hang out, what Groups to join, and other things you might want to share with your audience.

Watch Realtime Activity Flow To Your Profile

Google's realtime reports allow you to sit back and watch activity happening on your content right this second.

View Traffic Stats For Your Content

Google Analytics allows you to dive into traffic stats for deviations, Journals, Galleries, Collections, and other areas of your Profile Page. See which deviations are the most popular today and find out where that traffic is coming from.

Track and Analyze Your Watches and Favourites

Our Google Analytics integration tracks when someone watches or adds your artwork to their favourites, allowing you to view charts and statistics of these events. How many favourites did Reddit traffic give you this week? How many new watchers did you gain last weekend after submitting your newest deviation? Did you gain more watchers this month or last month?

Favourites and Watches are available under Google Analytics' "Events" reports.

...And A Ton Of Other Reports

Here's just a sample of some of the stats you can see:

  • Traffic charts, graphs, and statistics by date
  • Traffic demographics (geographic locations, languages...)
  • Visitor stats (new visitors, returning visitors, time spent on pages, number of pages viewed, bounce rates...)
  • Top sites and social networks sending you traffic and, for some social networks, the individual posts that are linking to your content
  • Search engine keywords people are using to find your Profile Page and content

Measure How Your Activity Impacts Your Audience Growth

Google Analytics can help you make decisions on how you manage your deviations. It can also allow you to see the impact of your on site activities.

  • If you find that your audience is more active on certain days or times, you’ll be able to determine a schedule for posting new art or Journals.

  • Perhaps you’ll find that the more you comment, the more you see your pageviews and watch list jump.
  • If commenting, and critiquing others’ artwork for example, helps increase the level of activity on your Profile, perhaps you’ll decide to do this more frequently.

This is nice feature! Too bad it's only for Premi.

please excuse my ignorance;
Does this mean that a member's activity on DA passes through Google whereas it didn't before. Or is it just DA giving access to info that DA was collecting from Google already?

Thanks.

formatela In reply to Alexander-Musset [2014-03-21 18:24:44 +0000 UTC]

DA have been using Google Analytics for some years to produce their own management stats, so gathering this data is not a new thing. What is new is that the functionality has been made available to premium members so that they can specify and view summary stats for their own DA page.

Add a Tracker Blocker extension and you'll be fine.

Correct is that DA gives access to Google to collect activities from your account. But only when you activate it. That's why you have to enable it in your settings, create an Analytics account and put in your Analytics ID.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

formatela In reply to Lilyas [2014-03-21 18:28:18 +0000 UTC]

No, that's not correct. Google has been collecting DA data for years. DA has been using it to produce their own management stats. This is an extension of that usage. When you activate it, it flags up that you want a consolidation of your own page stats.

Alexander-Musset In reply to Lilyas [2014-03-20 00:41:07 +0000 UTC]

So that means that I would only be getting data from other people that had activated it too?
And that would only be Premium members who have Analytics account?

Sorry, I don't know if my questions are stupid

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

formatela In reply to Alexander-Musset [2014-03-21 18:36:32 +0000 UTC]

No, that's not correct. If you activate it you will get data about everyone that visits your page, unless they use some external means to prevent Google from tracking their activity. Similarly if you visit someone else's page and they have it activated, your visit will be a part of their stats regardless of whether or not you have activated it. It's not too big a deal because the data, as far as I can tell, is anonymous summary data. It will count you as a visitor at a certain time and it will count you as a visitor of a particular gender at a certain time etc etc, but it will not say something as personal as 'Alexander-Musset visited your page and left a comment'.

Your question is not stupid. There seems to be a lot of confusion about what this GA thing is and how it works. I'm a little confused myself.

Thanks, I think came to the same understanding after looking at it for a while.
I am not worried about users seeing my data, because as you say the personal information will be hidden.

For me there is the issue of the principle of passing DA users info through Google servers because it is a third party and you have no control once it is outside of DA servers. It is also an issue of who are you having a relationship with. It is with DA but now DA has decided to do something with your information even if you like it or not. I didn't give them permission.

Even if Google can't see the personal details they use data collected from many sources in  general.

lt  that makes them very powerful. Too much power in just one organisation it doesn't matter who,
is unfair from a commecial view and dangerous in other ways.

Even if the personal data is hidden. It is still there, but just encoded to make it invisible. It is still my personal information.

Yes, it is all very confusing unless you spend lots of time figuring out who is doing what, with which info, and how it is being done. It is just a huge headache because when you do the research you find that your understanding is not exactly correct but then it leads to more questions  .....aaaahh!

I don't like the feeling of being just a part of someone elses machine/agenda but do I have the time and energy? and then I can't do anything when I find out anyway. The internet is great but the price is heavy.

Soon there will not be a generation who  knows what it is like to live a life where the moment you step out of your door, no-one knows where you are or what you are doing, unless you want them to. Where it is just you and your environment. Being about twelve years old, jumping on my bike early on a Sunday morning and riding miles to wherever in London. And then coming back at lunchtime; parent: "Where have you been?" me: "On my bike" parent: "Oh - lunch is ready go and wash your hands"

Or about 16 years old lying through my teeth: "Where are you going?"  - "Oh just to John's" when in fact I was going to Dave's - to do what you do when you listen to Pink Floyyd at Dave's. They still do it. But they are always on the end of a mobile. They have to make-up a double lie as to why they weren't answering the phone. Too complicated!

Yes, I agree with most of what you are saying.
Also, by the way, this isn't something that has only just started on DA. DA have been using GA to produce their own management stats for quite some time, so the data you mention has been going to Google's servers anyway.

I don't really see the point in a Google thing for deviantART..Why should we care who comes here from Google? We don't even use it on here.

It's a cool idea and all....but shouldn't it be for something like YouTube that actually uses Google?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Super-Incognito In reply to JaneyKara [2014-03-19 22:26:59 +0000 UTC]

You completely misunderstand the whole purpose of this tool. Google Analytics shows you statistics and reports about WHOLE traffic on your website. Information like what websites people come from to see your page (and not only google as you suggests), how do they act on your website, who are they and such. There are analytic programs other than GA and all of these do the same thing. So just the fact that this one belongs to Google have no influence on it's functionality.

yeah, they made the comments section WORSE than it already was. now instead of seeing the word "dick" everywhere, its actual pictures of dicks. then also the layout of the website is utter shit, you cant have a video with a single second of music without some bullshit company RIDING up your ass because the "claimed" it.
ever heard of "right of purchase?" GOOGLE IS BREAKING THE LAW!!!!!!!
we have a RIGHT to do what we want with the things we buy. ive had people complain of videos being taken down because they have 2 seconds of music in their video, despite the fact that they PAID for that music though iTunes or some shit.

on another note, who pays for music online these days? XD

You clearly don't understand copyright law if you think you have the right to do what you want with the things you buy. That's a bit worrying if you are posting artwork on DA. I take it if you saw somebody selling copies of your images and making money from them without your permission, or turning your images into a slideshow and using it on youtube you'd be okay with that, would you?

AmethystForge In reply to otaku4242 [2014-03-19 21:05:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the Youtube comments have become nearly entirely mean, pompous, gross, and absurd...I've seen outright death threats, porn references, hack threats, bashing decent singers because they're not Bieber/Miley/whatever...I've even seen a surge of chain mail bull on Youtube (and DA for that matter ).

I don't know which notice annoys me more: "Viacomm has removed this due to copyright...", "Video removed by user", or "This music video is not available in YOUR country". The one about countries tends to feel rather personal, and I want to show them this when it says I can't see it in my country...

Thankfully I accidentally disabled comments on Youtube for when I'm signed in. Not sure how it happened, but I'm relieved for it.

Honestly, it isn't that bad when you get used to it. I found out I could actually USE A YOUTUBE NAME WITH NO SPACES WITH G+.

perhaps, but you know what happens when we start to expect less out of companies? we GET less, and we don't deserve less.
why would you need to login to one website JUST so you could login to another?
that's like saying "you cant login to yahoo without first logging into deviantart". its ridiculous really.
also the comments system, now instead of people saying "dick" everywhere, there are actual PICTURES of dicks everywhere.

not that I read the comments on Youtube, but some people do, and we really get sick of seeing dicks everywhere. they actually made the comment system WORSE than it already was.

gah, and theres so much more

After the surge of snapchat-esque dick pics, the comments section mostly died down fortunately. My beef is now that Google seems adamant that I get a G- account to use youtube. The only social networking account I have is a Facebook one, and I use that exceedingly rarely. I'm not interested in G- at all and it still badgers me, as well as making my comments reply button only work approximately 43% of the time.

I managed to sneak in under the radar though; when G- showed up on Youtube I of course already had an account, and sometimes when I log in it will say I have yet to create my G- account, yet I can still comment, upload or watch videos. Score!

the other problem is that content creators are SO LIMITED in what they are allowed to put up.

oh, you paid $1.99 for a song on ITunes and you want to put 2 measly seconds of it in a video? NOPE! VIDEO TAKEN DOWN!

mother fuckers are breaking the law. haven't they ever heard of right of purchase???

Oh, the content creators only get flagged if their accounts are monetised.

I just think that google really fucked up youtube, and the site was already quite unbalanced before they came in and screwed it up.

- I like it, I really don't think people are paying attention... It's an addition to the premium membership
, and the ones who usually buy the memberships are buying it for another reason * before they saw this update *
It's something extra that people who are selling their art can benefit from. Stats are important in calculating commission funds or
just out of curiosity. Don't like it and have PM don't use it, don't want PM and don't like it? not your problem. -

'Don't like it and have PM don't use it, don't want PM and don't like it? not your problem'
That's about the most sensible and succinct summary I've seen in this journal. Very nice.

I don't have the traffic anymore for this to be useful. Don't know where the traffic all went but it's not here anymore.
The only reason I have a premium is to get rid of all the ads especially when they use to be riddled with virus' (still might be don't know) and for the portfolio feature, because I am a graphic designer in my professional personal life. I love the fact that I can use it without any of dA's branding on it. I upload cartoon fan art here for my own amusement in my spare time.

My reason for Premium are the same as yours - mainly to get rid of the ads which I found really annoying.
The traffic is still here, but it's a different kind of traffic these days. A lot of it seems to be from people who don't contribute artistically themselves, which is okay, but unfortunately, many of them come here to find free stolen almost hard core porn, which isn't really okay. Unfortunately that seems to be the way this site is going. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty open minded, witness my own favourites, but there are limits to what this place should allow.
