DeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.
For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.
How It Works
Deviants can now change their username in their Settings . To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership . (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical process that can create confusions for fellow deviants.) Once changed, your previous username will redirect to your new profile. You can only change your username once per six months and you are not able to change back to the original username.
What Happens When You Change Usernames
Once you change your username, you will be logged out and asked to login again using your new username and existing password.
Everything will be transferred
Your deviations (artwork), favourites, watchers, messages, stats, settings, etc., will all be transferred to the new username. The only thing that doesn’t transfer are the places where people mentioned your old username in comments, journals, artwork descriptions, etc. However, those links will redirect to your new username.
Your watchers will be notified
Your watchers will get a notification in their Message Center informing them that you have changed your username. Also, "(formerly [username])" will display on your new username’s Profile Page and next to your username for one month. This notice will always display (even after the one month) if someone visits your old profile and is redirected to the new one.
Further Details
- Username changes are available to anyone with an active Premium Membership -- whether you bought it yourself or it was gifted to you.
- You cannot change your username to one that is taken even if you are the owner of both. You cannot claim a deactivated account.
- You can simply change the capitalization of your username.
- No one will be able to claim your old username.
- Group username changes are not supported at this time.

I see. I re-read this article and see it is supposed to fully disappear after 1 month unless a user intentionally goes to one of your former usernames' page. In this case they will be sent to your new username's page, and the bubble containing your old name will appear for that user.

I'm not sure if you've discovered this by now, the six months isn't for the name to actually change! It's a time interval that's required if you want to do another name change... in other words, if you change your name, you need to wait six months until you can again!~
Personally I feel this feature is ok, and if it wasn't a thing, there's a chance a lot of users in the community would be trying to change their username numerous times back to back, which leads to the likelihood of someone trying the same name at the same time, which could confuse the system... not just that, personally if someone I watch would change their username every other week, it's a little redundant to me...

People have bought Premium memberships specifically to change their name.
So only makes sense to charge for it if people are willing.~
Though DA several years ago, actually use to make you pay to see thumbnails of art in your watch list, if I remember correctly.
The what last year, they actually let anyone post thumbnails to their art in comments know.
I feel it's doubtful they'd do the same with names, but you never know what they could change in the future.~
(otherwise there's the making a new account option for those who don't wanna pay and don't mind losing their statistics.~)

Does anyone know the reasoning behind not being able to take a deactivated account?
If that person never uses their account it kind of seems like a waste of a name that someone would actually like to have.
Why not have like a 5 year rule? If an account has been deactivated for 5 years someone can take it?
(I wanted to change my name to Voi which was what I originally wanted, but there was a username squatter that did nothing with their account, and now they're deactivated. There's quite a few people who mispell my username as Voii, so it would've been nice to just have Voi. :/ )

i'm pretty sure it's because of how the system works. even though the account is deactivated, the account still technically exists. having an ability to take the name of a deactivated deviant would conflict with the way the system works.
but i do really like the idea of an account being 100% erased after some years, because if it were completely removed then there wouldn't be any conflict within the system.
the only issue i could see with that is any mentions of the account before it deactivated. yknow, how when you mention a deactivated user and it shows up crossed out? they'd have to rewrite or alter that function a lot to compensate for the ability to take outdated usernames. it'd be kind of confusing and frustrating for any mention of the deactivated user to suddenly become a link to your profile where you re-used the outdated name.
also, it is possible to change a username back to a previous one, deviantart just refuses to do it. deviantart for some reason complied and changed the name of my previous account back to an old username when i contact them about it, but i've yet to meet a single person that shared an experience like that.

I have a question.
I want to change my name so it can match all my other social medias instead of all being different names.
I know we have to buy a membership BEFORE we can change a name and I will buy the membership, but I want to know a question before I do that.

You'll keep your new username. Also, nobody else could use your old username so if you were to enter your old username in the link to your page, it would go straight to your new page with a "formerly [username here]." You basically still HAVE your old username, but you don't go by it anymore nor is it under any of your art.
You could just block your ex.
