DeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.
For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.
How It Works
Deviants can now change their username in their Settings . To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership . (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical process that can create confusions for fellow deviants.) Once changed, your previous username will redirect to your new profile. You can only change your username once per six months and you are not able to change back to the original username.
What Happens When You Change Usernames
Once you change your username, you will be logged out and asked to login again using your new username and existing password.
Everything will be transferred
Your deviations (artwork), favourites, watchers, messages, stats, settings, etc., will all be transferred to the new username. The only thing that doesn’t transfer are the places where people mentioned your old username in comments, journals, artwork descriptions, etc. However, those links will redirect to your new username.
Your watchers will be notified
Your watchers will get a notification in their Message Center informing them that you have changed your username. Also, "(formerly [username])" will display on your new username’s Profile Page and next to your username for one month. This notice will always display (even after the one month) if someone visits your old profile and is redirected to the new one.
Further Details
- Username changes are available to anyone with an active Premium Membership -- whether you bought it yourself or it was gifted to you.
- You cannot change your username to one that is taken even if you are the owner of both. You cannot claim a deactivated account.
- You can simply change the capitalization of your username.
- No one will be able to claim your old username.
- Group username changes are not supported at this time.
Username changes have been one of our most requested features, and we're excited to offer this option. We understand the desire to adapt as you progress as an artist and it is our hope that username changes will facilitate this growth. As always, we're eager to hear your feedback!

I attempted to log into my account recently after a break from deviantart. My username had been changed without my knowledge or request. I want to be active on deviantart and buy a yearly premium and support this site but I want my original username (god) back.
I have seen this change done this for users in the past. I enjoy supporting deviantart through premium memberships and supporting artists alike. I am at no fault and I just want to be active again. I am a premium member as well.

Is there any way of finding out if the username we WANT is available BEFORE we purchase a premium membership and attempt to change our username?

because DA doesnt care about its users and the fact that they're causing its trans gender users to either pay them money to change their name or be trapped with something that makes them dysphoric

fuzzy thats not how it works. transitioning name can be complicating
also why do you have to bring transgender into this?
fyi i am trans too

i bring this up because i had to buy my girlfriend a core just so da would stop calling her a name that gave her dysphoria
theres nothing wrong with trans ppl that wanna keep their names or not transition
that doesnt make them any less trans
but yes, not allowing users to change their names unless they pay for it is inherently transphobic whether its DA's intention or not
and your trans experiences do not override the experiences or feelings of other trans ppl, okay?

get the fuck over yourself, lmao.
deviantart isn't gonna change a system that's there for a good reason just because your girlfriend was too whiny to just make a new account or something. you clearly don't know the goddamn definition of transphobia.
not giving you everything your snowflake ass wants =/= being transphobic
the system works because it stops the site from having mass amounts of name changes. if everyone could change their username, it'd be hectic and hard to keep up with. not everyone has a core membership, and therefor not everyone can change their name. it's simple and it works and you and your 'professional web developer' gf need to stop thinking your feelings override an actual functioning system. not everything that upsets you is oppression.
almost no other website as large as this one give you the ability to change a username, so it only makes sense that a website as gigantic as deviantart would want you to pay money to get a special feature like that. it's common sense that special features on website are almost always pay-to-get.

3 whole websites, i'm impressed. that still doesn't change the point?? a majority of big websites want you to pay for certain things, literally fucking nobody is being transphobic by doing that.
yes, there are big websites that let you do this specific thing, but they typically make up for it by having you pay for other things. any website that has a 'premium' option is going to withhold abilities to people who have premiums, that's just how business works.
if the website refused to let you change the gender you had set, then i'd say you've got an argument, but you don't.
i want you to point to a time in this conversation where i dissed trans people. point to a word i said that was directly an insult to trans people. tell me where i said i hated trans people.
if you can't point to one, then stop throwing the fucking word 'transphobe' around like confetti, because you're making a fool of yourself.
the definition of transphobia is "intense dislike of or prejudice against transgender people."
nowhere, and i mean nowhere in this conversation did i show to have an intense dislike or prejudice against transgender people. i know you've got a brain in there, so use it before you start calling trans people transphobes for disagreeing with your bogus ideas.
also, before you try and say it, pointing out that something isn't transphobic =/= prejudice.

i have no issue with da having you pay for things
i have an issue with da exploiting trans ppl by not letting them change their name unless they pay for it
and since you are clearly okay with the exploitation of trans ppl then yes, i cant help but conclude that u are transphobic
and, yes? it does change the point? it shows that theres no reason why DA has to make ppl pay for that feature specifically
theres many other things they could charge for
things that wouldnt be actively exploiting trans ppl
also, i just have to say your first line makes no sense. twitter as far as i know doesnt make you pay for anything. tumblr doesn't either.
im pretty sure they get their money thru ads on their pages
which, might i add, DA has ads as well
unless you have core ofc, and thats a great reason to charge for core. it helps the site run and helps the user not have to look at ads.
I have no problem with core as a concept, and most of the features im perfectly cool with being behind a paywall.
but not letting you change your name is wrong, and you arent gonna convince me otherwise.

deviantart isn't fucking exploiting trans people. literally what the kind of mindset makes you think that not letting you freely change your username is exploiting trans people??? if deviantart was making trans people pay to change their set gender, then you'd have the argument that it'd be transphobic and exploitation of trans people. but guess what? it's not.
are you actually incapable of grasping the simplicity of this???? nobodies exploiting trans people, therefor i'm not supporting the exploitation of trans people. you're being absolutely delusional and i can't for the life of me see a logical reasoning behind what you're saying.
you seem to have the mindset that if a trans person disagrees with your bullshit idea of what is and isn't transphobia then they're automatically transphobic, which makes 0 sense. 🤔
i said "a majority of big websites", i didn't say "tumblr and twitter make you pay for things". i know they don't, because they're so gigantic of sites that they don't need the extra money. deviantart constantly complains about not having enough money, so it makes sense that they'd make a premium feature. there is absolutely not a single thing about not letting non-core members change their usernames that is "exploiting trans people". they're just doing what any website that needs extra money is doing, and are charging for a special feature.
the reason this feature is special is that it only came out in the last few years, so it's still technically new and considered an upgrade, therefor it's one of the things you get with a paying membership. it's not unusual for a website to make a new feature part of their premium package if they have one.
this has nothing to do with gender or transgender people. it's a username, not the gender your profile is set to. this isn't a fucking feature made purely for the exploitation of trans people, end of story.
quick question, are you trans?

i really dont feel like repeating everything ive said
if you dont understand me, then i really dont know how to get you to
ive reworded several times and made a point of saying that it migth not have been implemented with trans ppl in mind but it does affect trans ppl therefore it needs to be changed
if you choose not to understand me then theres really nothing i can do about that either
and no, im not trans. and im not gonna drag in my trans gf into this so she can tell you the same thing.
in fact, 100% of the reason i feel this way is because she couldnt get a CORE for a while and suffered dysphoria until she spoke up to me and i bought it for her. she suffered because of DA's practices.
yes, she couldve made a new account but she wouldve lost everything and wouldve had to start again from scratch. which is unfair. why should she have to suffer dysphoria or restart her account entirely just bc she is trans?
Thats the million dollar question that ive asked countless times but havent gotten an answer for. Why does DA HAVE to charge to change usernames when they can and do charge for other things? When other websites, even big ones with millions of users, let them change usernames at will and dont have these made up problems you people have been saying will happen if you allow it without a paywall?

"and no, im not trans."
that's it, that's all i had to hear to 100% make everything you say complete bullshit. bye lmao.
stop trying to be a goddamn sjw advocate for trans people when you're not even trans yourself, saying "but my gf is trans!!!" just makes you sound dumber and dumber. you're not the voice for trans people so stop trying so hard to be.
you're argument is lacking any solid reasoning behind it other than "my gf's feewings were hurt : ((("

Um, good for you?
How does wanting my girlfriend and any trans person who feels dysphoria to be safe being too sensitive lol
Maybe you could use some basic human empathy. Just a little.

How is it wrong?
They are being transphobic. Whether its the intention or not. Changing a username is not that technically difficult to require people to pay for it, and its such a random thing to put a paywall behind that it feels like it is singling out people who might need to change their name i.e. trans people whose original name has something to do with their deadname
DA just needs to be more caring about their users.
I mean heck, I just went through a situation where i paid for a core membership for my friend but it literally took a week for DA to even give him what I paid for. And that was after I spammed the help desk and made the situation public.
Don't get me wrong, I love the people here, just this company needs to start caring about its users.
If you disagree, thats fine, but you dont need to insult me personally over it.

i dont want too be rude. but your statement sounds dumb. sorry if i am rude again.
the company needs money to keep its website going. and one of the ways to do so is to allow name changing to core members. this is not a regular social media like instagram or facebook. they need money or else their website will stop. i know that allowing username change to non core members will not ruin deviantart itself. but by disabling it, they can earn more money.
the second reason is because if they allow username change to everyone, the website itself will be confused and also laggy. it will harder to keep track of members and also it will be harder to moderate them. thus making the website easier for hackers
next time you want to argue, please use facts more than opinions. thanks <3

So other websites don't need money to run and also they have some special thing that keeps username changes from making their website confused and laggy? Are you sure these are facts, because that is just, uh, wrong. No matter how big instagram and Facebook is, they are still companies that need money to run.
You shot yourself in the foot with your own argument. Other websites allow you to change your user but don't become "laggy and confused." What makes Deviantart incapable of this? Why does Deviantart have to make the ability to change your username part of CORE's membership? Its not like the only reason people get a CORE is for that purpose. I bet most who get CORE don't even care about that feature. I mean I have a CORE and I have literally no interest in changing my user.
Theres plenty of things they could charge for. Its not like they absolutely have to make that feature specifically behind a paywall otherwise they'll go under. They're choosing that one, and they should be held responsible for that choice.
I wouldnt care if it cost a few cents per widget added to your page, or if there were tiers of memberships, other things to buy than points, prints and CORE from DA if it meant that trans people could change their name without having to pay for it.
And you want to deter hackers? Let there be a cooldown period. You can change your name, but you have to wait a week to change it again. There. Problem solved.
The moderation thing is just silly though. It doesnt matter if you change your name, its still the same account. The only people that will be affected is the people on your friends list, and thats, um, already a thing that happens. The ability to change your name at all comes with that. But a simple page check should clear up the confusion.

i dont think you understand to be honest. once again im sorry for acting like a brat
i'm used to be a hacker and a moderator on different websites. i know how things are supposed to work
i do not want to continue this shitty argument. so please stop saying nonsense to me

are you sure because ive been sending this whole thing to my gf who is a professional web developer
and she says what youre saying is pure nonsense
she has a degree and gets paid to make websites
and yes, she also knows how to hack things
also, don't say you're sorry for being rude or being a brat because, you just aren't
if you were then you would stop
you dont even seem to care about anything other than "winning the argument"
what exactly are you trying to prove here?
that its okay for companies to exploit trans people because it helps them keep running?
i just
this is getting silly.

I need help, I was forced today to change my username to something I didn't want.
I want my old username back. It's my brand.
I was "Ayato-Inverse" and my logos and links to everything else related to my art goes by that name.
I need to change it back, waiting 6 months is atrocious!
If it can't be exactly "Ayato-Inverse" the I will change it slightly but it has to be basically that!
I will legit pay money to change it now.

Actually I did get my username back after seeking help. My situation was unique in the sense that the name was changed against my will.
My name has since been changed again because it was connected to the person who changed my name against my will the first time and I finally decided to get out of that controlling/abusive situation and cut all ties related to them.
Thank you though!

I wish there was just a 'buy a name change' thing on here.
You could just buy a name change instead of buying the whole membership just to do it.
I just want to change my name

You can buy yourself a core membership for 1 month. It's simple. You make another account and then you go to your 'main' account and give yourself a one-month-Core membership. That is a lot cheaper than a 3-month or a year-membership.
And when real money is an issue, you can make a donationpool and follow/llama/fave with dAhub for points. Give the 400 points to your second account and then give yourself a 1-month.
I hope it helps you out!

lol we should be able to claim users off dectivated accounts tbh
like the ones that are permanently deactivated/banned rather than indefinitely banned n stuff like that
like after a certain amount of time the user should become up for grabs ?
