"Right this way, sirs. If you could please sit here."

A small living room space of sorts where a plush couch sat, was where Hunter and Huebey were led. Hunter whined under his breath as he sat down, his hand gripping his cane a little too tight as he bent down and felt a creak up his amputated knee. The stress of everything building up for today made him ache everywhere since last night. It took a lot to not feel too worked up, and least of all keep his mind off a little from what he'd been told yesterday. News about his visitor... just what in the world could that mean?

Huebey leaning into his side snapped him out of losing focus, nearly spacing out as Valerie as well as two other folk sat across from them in the other couch.

They introduced themselves, and Valerie was the one to start explaining.

"When you killed your visitor in August, we've been made aware you were told there's a chance that your brother, what your visitor manifested as, could indeed become a folk."

Hunter somberly nodded, though he sat up when Valerie took a breath.

"Well, that might have happened after all."

He'd wondered if this was indeed what they'd talk about, and the flutter in his chest was so strong he felt he lost his breath for a moment. "Really? For real? B-but- but everyone said-"

"Everyone was told to say they saw nothing, Hunter. Because we weren't sure what we were dealing with." Valerie winced at Hunter's hurt expression. "It was something theorized but never seen before, I'm not even sure how-" She paused and let out a sigh. "Well, either way. What really happened was when your visitor disappeared, your brother took its place. However, your brother acted very... strange, and we didn't know if he was a visitor again or not. We had to take him in for rehabilitation until we were more sure of what we were dealing with."

Hunter felt as if a literal tornado were in his stomach and mind, with everything being taken and just barely understood. So, it was his brother, but not really? "Wh-what do you m-mean...?" He whispered, tilting his head gently as he felt himself choke up with tears. The confusion lead to feeling the need to cry it out, with all his emotions stacking up too high. Was his brother alive, or was he dead? He thought he'd killed him months ago, and forced himself to move on. And now all of that was simply not true anymore?

"I- I know, this is really hard to listen to, I'm so sorry. But we haven't been absolutely sure if he's your brother or your visitor who is still disguising itself to harm you. Do you understand? We've been trying to clarify as best we can, but our reasonings are closer to thinking he's a folk than not, but- you're the best way to find that out for sure."

Huebey was glaring daggers at the folk across from them. "You said this would be good news."

"Well, it is, because it provides closure. And- like I said, we do think he's more folk than not. But having Hunter here, it's the best way to find out."

"So, he's- he's alive...? He's- where is he?" Hunter sat up, eyes glimmering as he wiped at his face. He didn't even process or care what their intentions were for bringing him here- he heard his brother being alive and it invigorated him. "Please, I wanna see him. Is- am I allowed? Is that what this is for?"

"I-" Valerie blinked, and looked at her colleagues, who said a few things and nodded. She turned back to them with a smile. "Yes, I... I'm sorry for the hasty explanation. It really has been some stressful months and we've been wanting to explain this to you for a while now, but it all piled up and you were unavailable for some time... but we're going to get this all sorted. Just a minute, please."

Hunter would have wanted to get up and follow behind the folk that trailed out of the room, but his joints hurt, and he slumped back into the couch with a shaky whine. "O-oh my god. What's happening..."

"I don't know, and I don't like it. They better not be pulling something, again." Huebey seethed, rolling his eyes, but his expression was scrunched in worry for Hunter as he also sat back and took his hands. "You're okay?"

"Yeah. I'm gonna be okay. I'm nervous... like, my brother, who, you know...?" He shook his head, lost for words. He still didn't know his name. After all this time, after thinking he'd killed him, Hunter didn't know his brother's name. Tearing up again, Hunter let out a breath and sat up, feeling jittery all over. He felt like he wasn't in the room, and yet he was right there, waiting for his brother, apparently. "What did- what did any of that mean? That he's been around this whole time but they hid it? Why'd they do that? Is he hurt, is he like... mean? Different? I don't think he was mean..." Hunter stared down at his hands still being held and soothed by Huebey, then meeting his eyes desperately.

Huebey simply shook his head. "I don't know..."

Both lost for words, they sat in silence.

"He's ready to see you now. Are you ready, Quartz?"

Valerie looked at him all over. They were in range now, within that distance where a visitor shouldn't contain itself properly towards its traveler. Her kind but observant eyes tried to miss not a single detail.

And yet, he stood still- polite, but stiff, with that worried smile and those sad eyes. "Y-yes, ma'am..." He responded dutifully, though his voice wavered.

Valerie relaxed as she glanced to her coworkers. This was going to be alright.

"Come this way, then."

--

The click of the door made Hunter jump too much, and he whirled around alongside with Huebey towards it, all his senses making his phyl pound in his chest.

Valerie came in, and then...

Hunter gasped softly, and struggled to stand, fumbling for his cane to come over.

Pain shot up his leg, but he kept walking, because right there was a familiar face.

Soft, round face, with gentle sweeping horns and ears too long to stand properly. He strode forward, shyly, hands tucked to his chest. His blue eyes shone with relief.

Huebey held Hunter's arm so he could walk better, looking between the two. "Hunter, is that...?"

"Yeah, it is." He said, grinning tearfully.

Everything came flooding back.

His brother took his hand, then he was tugged into a tight hug.

"Quartz," He choked out, just barely, before sniffling and collapsing into relieved sobs. Quartz didn't say a word, merely hugging him back, though Hunter also heard him crying, too. He held him tighter, not even knowing what to say, but not wanting to, as he merely held his brother.

His brother, who was alive.

None of it made sense right then, but he didn't care.

They were together, after all this time.
