Description
A tribute to my favorite cartoon character and one of my favorite books in one piece of art!So, I looked up Darkwing Duck on the net for model reference, and noticed that there was an official comic series based on the cartoons. More ingenious was that the series paid homage to classic Batman comic covers by sticking Darkwing Duck characters in the same layout. However, I thought it was unusual that none of the Darkwing Duck covers ever referenced one of the most recognizable splash pages in the history of Batman books. So, I thought I better hurry up and whip this up before someone else got to it.
Have y’all figured out the book I riffed on?? Sure, you have. If you collect comics it’s most likely in your library.
That’s right, folks! The legendary Batman and Robin splash from Frank Miller’s ”Dark Knight Returns”
Done on 11x14in Bristol Board with ink, sharpies marks and color pencils.
Also, check out the Darkwing Duck comics. They have amazing work by James Silvani and Leonel Castellani.

Oh hell yes, now this is awesome! You caught the poses rather well; having tried to copy that particular scene sever times and failing each time more miserably than the time before you got my upmost respect for having executed it in such perfection.
I also love the colours and the looks of the town, though the sky could use a tadbit more smoothing out. But that just me being a nitpick. Clearly, this is one great pic, there.

Thanks Felidae for your well written comment! Really great stuff. I do agreed with the sky. I don't remember why I did it in pencil colors? It was either a failed experiment or I didn't have the right markers? Anyway, thank you for your nicely detailed comment.

Ooh nice! DW and Gosalyn look awesome! The pose is a little confusing since DW looks like he should be reaching for a rope and Gosalyn would have her feet forward for landing or kicking, but, hey, I'm weird like that. I'm always looking for the story in an image.
Hmm. I think I've seen the cover you're referencing. Great job, especially with their proportions! Those two are tough to draw.
At first, the characters held my attention for so long that I barely noticed the background, but once I saw it, I was amazed. Very crisp and well detailed. Now I'm wondering what city that is across Audubon Bay. Lol. Ack, you've got me thinking. That's a good thing!

Is that Gosland as his sidekick? Just curious. It sounds like something she would do.

DannyNicholas In reply to reader1718 [2013-01-25 05:27:06 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, reader1718 for taking the time to leave a comment. Yes, Gosland in some the later episodes of Darkwing Duck took up super hero work as "the Quiver Quack," and even Honker was her sidekick. But she would end up teaming up with her uncle. Also,(in a funny way that everything connects) this art is a homage to a splash page in a Batman book "The Dark Knight Returns," in a Darkwing Duck episode Gosland travels to the future to find that DW has buffed up and become a darker and grittier superhero, which is a direct reference to the Dark Knight Returns comics.

Whoa. This is a spectacular adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns. You did a great job of imitating the poses, and that's a very well drawn St Canard cityscape.
Tbh, I'm not a fan of the art in the original splash page (the poses are a bit silly and melodramatic - don't kill me). But I actually think your DW and QW pull it off better than the original. Haha.
I'm thinking the DWD comics probably didn't reference this particular artwork because, well, as you said, they've done all those other references to classic covers already. Batman overload y'know
