I've always known her as Derpy Hooves. I never knew derpy was a derogatory term until i was looking up the character on wiki but that doesn't matter to me. She is one of the most lovable background pony in the show and i always smile when i see her.Β Β Its a bit of a piss off that Hasbro would change she voice in the show and now not letting her speak but at least they left her looking the same so here Derpy have all the muffins you want. they're blueberry and chocolateΒ

It is only a 'cruel internet-given name' if you believe it was intended to be such and more if Derpy can only have a negative meaning. It would seem part of the names reputation comes from South Park, which lets be honest arguably ruins everything it touches. Among many fans Derpy Hooves in a name of a beloved character with a love of muffins and eyes that aren't straight, with perhaps a certain degree of clumsiness and 'maybe' slowness.
Myself I never consider Derpy with mental issues, so comparing her to those to mental disabilities never came to mind.

Sure, she is kind of "derpy" but calling her that and then opening it up for serious mockery... Yeah. Bit much on their part for the character. Still love the char though, and sadly, I do get a laugh. More at the situations then the character, though.
