Description
This photo was taken by me. It is apparent that my left arm is outstretched and holding the camera. It was early in the morning, and I had a cold. And this is STILL the best picture of me that I have!
This is the same room (and same general area) as was used in the big head blogger image. Given that I posted THAT image of myself, I figured it would be nice to have one when my head was merely as freakishly big as it naturally is, and not abnormally huge.

Hey, you don't look anything like the squirrel.
You look like a Kevin Smith , Peter Jackson fusion.
And also, your webcomic is my favorite one.
Please, get the third book into print soon.

The photo was taken on campus; I don't even own one Mac, though I likely will eventually given that it's pretty much the standard in the graphic design field.

Because they're a waste of money when I'm just going to throw out the one-button mouse, wipe MacOS, and install Linux anyway... not to mention being less modular than the custom-built PC I'm using.

Partly because I feel a deep revulsion for (and distrust of) closed-source software. (I'm a programmer. I actually DO read and modify the code.) Partly because I can't stand machines with non-standardized and/or non-modular parts. (Obviously, I don't own a laptop)
Second, because I could never get used to the Mac user interface. For example:
- I feel there's something deeply wrong about separating the menu bar from the window it's tied to.
- I much prefer the X11 3-button mouse system. (There's a secondary clipboard called the selection. Just select some text to copy, and middle-click elsewhere to paste)
- Exposé is no substitute for a system which provides multiple desktops as a standard feature.
- I don't like the fact that the UI look and feel is chosen for me by someone else. (Part of a larger refusal to accept Apple's and Microsoft's "This way is better. You'll get used to it." attitude.)
- Until MacOS X came around, I just couldn't stand Macs because they lacked a command-line interface. I still don't trust them since, to the best of my knowledge, there is no "non-GUI" mode.
- The underlying architecture for MacOS X is blatantly inferior to that shared by all open-source UNIX-like operating systems on several points. For example, see the FreeDesktop.org Desktop Entry specification. (the method by which applications register themselves to display in the menu and open files)

All curretn Macs have 4-button mice. They just still look like a 1-button mouse with a scroll ball (yes, ball). They use capacitance sensing to determine which finger is clicking on the top surface for two buttons, clicking with the scroll ball is a third, an squeezing is the fourth. that said, I don't like the Apple Mighty Mouse, and use a Kensington ergo mouse.
-I don't trust a menubar that wanders around. I like it at the top where I can find it.
-Mac OS X 10.r (Leopard) has virtual desktops ("Spaces" in Apple-speak)
-there are several skin and theme utilities available for OS X
-True, there is no non-GUI mode, but you could just exclusively use the terminal. All CLI all the time. Why you'd want to do this is a mystery to me. I prefer to get things done rather than typing all the time. I will admit that certain operations are easier in the CLI, though (I'm a desktop support guy, mainly taking care of the art and Advertising department where I work. I get a lot fewer calls on the Macs, even accounting for the difference in numbers between deployed Mac and Windows boxen.)
-The underlying architecture of OS X *IS* UNIX. It's not just UNIX-like, it is BSD UNIX.
I'd say you haven't actually used a Mac for any length of time.
A buddy of mine who is a big-time Linux dude, working primarily for ISP and co-location companies, described MacOS X thusly: "It's UNIX, but with a pretty face, and it runs Office!" That last bit is important for consumers, see. I love the fact that it has all the power of UNIX, but GUI and ease of use if you don't want to play with the nuts and bolts. If I really want to be bad-a$$, I have Boot Camp and Parallels - I can dual-boot into any flavor of Windows, or I can run just about any X86 OS in a virtual machine.

ssokolow In reply to WrightDesigns [2007-12-13 12:59:27 +0000 UTC]
Ahh yes, I'd forgotten about the mighty mouse. Last I checked, my preferred way of holding it confused the capacitance sensors. As for the menu bar, that's one of those points we'll have to agree to disagree on.
As for Leopard, I'm glad to hear it has virtual desktops, but I just recently read an article about how Leopard's firewall configuration dialog is confusing and untrustworthy, so that's a point against it. (eg. You set "block all" and it still lets certain things like NTP and Samba through)
As for theming, I know MacOS has theming utilities, but I prefer it to be built-in and, on a related note, MacOS utilities tend to be shareware rather than freeware or open-source and I prefer to uphold my principles by only using stuff I can get without infringing somebody's copyright. (I NEVER pay for non-game software and on Linux I can do that legally... and the only games I play tend to require DOSBox or a Super Nintendo emulator. I do own the original diskettes and cartridges.)
Regarding CLI-mode, it's a matter of trust. I don't trust a system where GUI-failure means boot failure. In actual practice, I use a tool called Yakuake for my terminal work. (It provides a terminal which slides down/up when I press F12 similar to the console in the Quake games. Very useful for seamlessly mixing GUI and CLI stuff)
I know perfectly well that it's based on BSD UNIX. If it weren't I wouldn't give it a second glance. I say Unix-like because neither Linux nor the BSDs have paid for the right to use the UNIX trademark.
As for your friend's comment, I do have to agree. It's just that none of that interests me. Wine suffices for the few Windows games I like, you'd have to pay me a full-time salary to get me to use Microsoft Office instead of OpenOffice.org, and I don't want to have to spend copious amounts of time and possibly money just to get the level of flexibility that I'm already accustomed to. KDE fits my needs perfectly as a desktop environment and, were I to use MacOS, I'd end up replacing things like Finder (with Konqueror) anyway because they don't fit my expected system behaviour.
I'd consider it for my mother and brothers, but two of them are perfectly happy on Kubuntu Linux and the third is a gamer who dual-boots Windows and Linux quite happily.
