Description
An update of the Macross pic at [link] , now with all of the correct uniform colors in place. Gave blue skirts to the female pilots to match their shirts, the way the male pilot uniforms match. The Macross character designer’s illustrations indicated that he was going to do that as well. Updated morphs for all the characters, except for the blond to the left. Made the lighting of the back alleys look more alley-like. Added subsurface scattering to the hair to see what would happen. Gave the dynamic clothes new simulations, though these are the same old low res versions that yield low-detailed wrinkles. Still closer to what I was going for, though.Poser Pro 2012, Photoshop to edit out odd splotches due to Poser’s handling of indirect lighting. There are things about the old clothing shader Poser doesn't like, and keeps giving me moiré patterns.

Wow. Everything has improved so much. And it's not like it wasn't good before. The light, the morphs, the materials... your skills keep advancing. And I really like the additional character. She adds a bit of playfulness to the group, who all seem very accomplished and confident. I really like all of their poses.
As far as I've been able to tell, only two things help moire patterns. Sometimes, but not always, texture filtering can help an image. I've had that not work, though. What has consistently worked is going the other way, and making the texture clearer with a lower shading rate. While this will usually slow a render down, there might be a way to minimize the hit. The shading rate on the render is the minimum, not the absolute. If you lower the minimum shading rate and the shading rate of the individual items that need it, the other elements should still render at a normal pace. That said, the default shading rate is 0.2, which is pretty low. It probably wouldn't be too hard to write a script to control the shading rate of all the items in the scene so that you could raise the rate on all the items in the scene.
Still, it's a PITA. As far as I can tell, in real life what happens is a certain amount of blurring. Not that I've never seen Moire patterns in real life, but much less frequently.

Thanks! Indeed, the new character and her brunette friend are the inexperienced pilots, while the others are leaders and veterans.
I tried your suggestions and it helped somewhat, but it's largely an old shader that needs updating in many ways. And thanks for the tips about the Shading rate, I didn't know quite all those details.
While correcting some of that, I applied SSS to all the hair to see what would happen. The current settings work much better on lighter, as expected. But that turns it into an overnight render...

It works better on lighter *hair*, that is.

That's interesting. I've been using SSS on hair since you mentioned it (I'd had fake SSS in my hair shader for ages and was primed to try the real thing), and it's been working pretty well on dark hair, too. At least I think so. Maybe I'm missing something, because I'm so used to painting over hair. I think in that respect, my standards might be lower than most people's.

For me it's a first test on colors other than blonde and it uses unglamorous, dark lighting. Not ideal conditions, but for a quick test, most of the hair turned out okay. But with the brunettes I ended up blending the regular and SSS images in Photoshop to get something usable. I might revise or optimize that shader one day. Well, your painted hair looks pretty good in the end, so I don't think your standards are low.
And thanks again for the compliment above. I sounded blasé about it, but I really appreciated it.
