Description
The concept was what happened on planet Hoth after the events of Empire Strikes Back and forward. This scene is a Tie fighter exploring one of the tunnels in a larger hidden network once used by the rebels.I experimented using a new ice shader I created specifically for Vray and I'm very happy with the results.
Created using Autodesk Maya and 3D Studio Max rendered using Vray 3

Muahaha! Thank you, I actually used both Autodesk Maya and 3D Max 2013 64bit. I previously modelled the tie fighter using Maya, and I installed the new version of Vray on Max so I ended up using it as a test and decided to just finish the cave and rendering the entire scene using it.

Thanks! I modelled the cave tunnel and to get the light to refract just right, I rendered the scene halfway up the tunnel (or down however you look at it). The texture is a procedural that I've worked on. I didn't want the ice to be clear ice nor super super shiny, I wanted the more snowy / hard ice look without being the traditional white, when pure white, it's hard to notice all the details of the surface I put in.

Still the result is pretty good! It pisses me off so much when I work on every single detail and the final render barely show them up!
I really need to give it a go rendering with Vray. I normally use Mental ray, and have tried Arnold too... unfortunately all my attempts to install these render cracks on my laptop for Autodesk have been in vain so far :/

Mental Ray and VRay are similar however, VRay uses it's own lights and materials, whereas Mental Ray is compatible with native maya lights and materials so it tends to be a bit easier to use. You may want to do multiple passes within Mental Ray; like one pass with gi and another without and experiment with the outcomes. Also your lights, the types of lights you're using, decay rate, shadows and even color (never use pure black) can greatly impact your details.
