Description
Older art I never uploaded. I thought I was gunna do more with it for upload but never got around to anything. It's a concept of one of the variations of water elemental dragons for the little world of them I have going on here. The design of this creature is pretty much a cross between a goblin shark and a moray eel. Well at least appearance and function wise of a sort. The jaws that you see are actually pharyngeal jaws that have modified in function to become the main jaws. The lower jaw has shrunken and just helps with the jaw launching/opening mechanism. This way the sudden expansion of the jaw on opening can both be used to grab prey and create a suction to ensue capture.
Well that's what I was going for anyway, I'm sure some of the biology needs sorting out.
The colors are just kinda slapped on to make the sketch pop a little, not necessarily indicative of the actual coloration.

Neato Is that bone or cartilage over its mouth when it's open?

Seeing as it is based a bit on shark anatomy I'd say a bit of both, the main jaws are surely bone but there must be a fair bit of cartilage for flexibility.

Ahh I kept thinking gulpereel/shark, since gulper eels are pretty much all cartilage (and also scary as hell) those deep sea sharks are beautiful though, Ruffle sharks, right?

My main inspiration was a mix between a goblin shark and an eel. There is a neat video of how the goblin shark's jaws kinda shoot out like my critter here. [link]

moray eels are one of my favorite animals! as soon as i saw the skeleton sketch i was like, "hrr? are those pharyngeal jaws?" combining shark and eel to make a dragon = pure awesomesauce.
