Description
…
I'll give you my time to kill
But you'll never never
Break my will
Or I could sink a sleeping pill
And in the morning could be
Sleeping still
But most of you are much too ill
Way beyond a surgeon's skill
In bondage to a dollar bill
What more can you buy?
Oh, when you think on it
We're all
Souls in isolation
Alive in here
I'm alive in here
…
Man, I really love to base my images on song titles or lyrics. And I really like the Chameleons and their melancholic rock music. probably not as melancholic as other post-punk groups, but it still fits to my vision of Loui, this goddamn trainwreck of a person. I often draw him manic and gleefully murdering people, but there is also the other side in his mind, the kind of angsty one. I am always a bit afraid that he will end up in extremes, either total emo or total asshole villain. Though I am glad that his character is now a lot more three dimensional after thousand rewrites and new concepts. At the beginning he was really just a stereotypical ‘insane psycho’ mad scientist who murdered just for the lulz. I think his broken, angsty side is a good way to make him sympathetic, even though he is still a serial killer. But he is also the main protagonist and his story became the story of a person who fell down a dark pit and who slowly finds the power and will to get back on the right path. So basically a story about a good guy gone bad and about his rehabilitation (still, he will always find a liking of killing unpleasant people)
Apart from phases of megalomania, urges to rip everyone apart and seeking revenge there are phases of depression and anxiety. Loui has been mentally ill since childhood, but his illness has always been the more harmless part of his personality, contrasted with his sociopathic behaviour. His biggest problem are certainly drugs and not just the ordinary ones you can buy for a dozen from shady underground figures, but synthetic drugs he mostly makes himself. Some of them are experimental, so no one really knows what they’ll do to your body and mind. And then there is also self harm… which I am not glorifying (though I have made fun of it in the past. Let’s say my humour was and is still bad. Though Loui would be the kind of guy laughing at himself too, mostly when he is feeling better and ready to stomp people under his boots).
His mental instability is also his big weak point. In Eternal Romance, the Esper’s (magic users) potential to use magic is connected to their own well being. If you are sick, mentallly or physically, then your magical ability decreases too. For Loui that’s extra shitty, because his phases can become so bad he can’t use any magic at all. And there are many people who like to see him dead and will use this chance… so Loui spends his time during a bad phase in his lab, closed behind many security doors. Hoping that no ‘tosser’ will get in.

I like the detailed sketches you did for the pills and syringes (especially the tablets that are shown to have volume due to the angle). The fact that it is colored in black and white except for just a couple colors makes it a powerful image.
I was really interested in the background information you offered on here too. It takes a while for a character to become something we will be satisfied with. Actually you're making me want to start writing about a certain character of mine. He's mentioned in stories and a group I run, but we had to tone down his history feeling it might be a bit much. Now I want to write it all out lol.

Thank you! I am glad those things create said impression. I was worried that the pills and syringes would look too random there XD
It definitely does. The thing is too, that I created Loui’s first incarnations when I was around 12 to 14 years old. His current self dates back to 2007. I was young and stupid and thought a lot of things were cool, such as totally mean, evil ‘psychos’. I take it as a good sign that when I look back at the old images and concepts I am feeling embarrassment. It’s a sign I have become more mature and learnt from past mistakes XD It also shows that the character himself has grown up and developed too.
You are very welcome ;> What kind of character is it? it would be cool, if you’d share his evolution then. I am always fascinated with how characters, stories and art styles change. i really love browsing through the ‘draw this again’ or character development submissions here.

I started writing chapter one of Azry's history, and already it's too much for dA, so I'm considering making a NSFW blog on tumblr specifically for him. He's probably my most unstable character, but really fun once I can get into his mind (he started as a RP character). He might be... 7 now??? Maybe older, I forget. I didn't really change anything for him, except now he has been recovering and his family is finally there for him after so long.
I think characters are always very basic when they're first created. It takes a long time for them to really take shape. Sometimes you have an idea for them, but they're constantly like "no, I'm actually like this" and they try to show you their true self. It's like, you try to make an idea work, but it just doesn't feel right. It's not exactly clicking with the character. Eventually you're able to find it, and everything just falls into place.

Unstable characters are really fun, I agree. But they need a lot of work. I speak from experience, since Loui gives me sometimes a hard time >_< 7 years are a long time. After such a long period they start becoming not only an important part of yourself, but familiars. Which makes it also harder to ensure their personality traits are balanced and their actions not romanticized.
True, most characters are a blank canvas at the beginning, unless you create one already with a backstory or personality in mind. But most of them have to aquire it over time. I know what you are talking about. As if your characters develop their own life and mind :3

Yeah, originally Azry was just a haunting memory of his youngest brother. They were five boys, Azry was the second born, the one he went after was the youngest. I'm not sure why I had Azry come back. It's like he was calling out, wishing for a chance, so I allowed it lol. He's become quite interesting, though I don't use him all that often. And he understands now what he did was very, very wrong.
I've tried giving characters backstories right off the bat, but for many of them it just won't click. So I create others lol. (have over hundreds now, somewhere). One that I knew was gonna be bad though is certainly bad, yes, but in the end she became one of my most evil. The more time and life you give to them though, the more interesting they become.
