Don't get me wrong, the others are really good. But having a background REALLY adds to the piece. Makes it look more anchored than having a floating body in space, so to speak.

Opps sorry thought you were referencing a painting and not a drawing, see what I get by responding before my coffee? Yes this was a longer pose then the 2 hours we normally have so I had time to position the model into an environment. Actually since all I had was her back... there wasnt that much of her to draw

Thats true, most of these are either demos on painting Ive done for my class or actually done from an open life drawing session. Unfortunately time is usually limited or they are what I consider a study. This is one of the few pieces of my actual paintings I have up. I should put up more of my art I guess but I mostly use this account as a reference place for my students in digital and traditional art.

I love this, very loose and very well balanced, I like your line quality, especially the knee. Almost tender.

Thank you so much, I always try to push my line quality so that it has a gestural effect.

Yeah, it adds that extra bit of artistry and I find it helps a viewer get into more. You can push or pull a motion out depending on which side of the line you follow

Gosh dang, your figure drawing is very impressive!!! I like how you use value to indicate planes and not just line to form the body That's tough for me
Got any tips for a newbie?

I would draw often from life... read my latest journal entry for why
Also study anatomy. A great book that is inexpensive is Bridgemans Constructive Anatomy ($10). It has many good drawings of anatomy to copy and learn from and its all broken down into top, side planes.

Sweet, I'll take a peek
Bridgmans constructive anatomy, eh. I'll have to pick that one up, I'm always in search of good reference material and what not. And good stuff is sometimes hard to find. Thanks

You should be able to find it on amazon, or at Barnes and Nobles or Borders bookstores for under $10.

Thank you for the feedback. I really have to remind myself to set the charcoal down and not overwork something!

You're welcome! Don't think that you overworked something on this piece ...

No I didnt... but its the exception
I feel I ususally do try and over work things... this is a good reminder not to and let it be a simple statement of the model!

I see I often also overwork things y'know. We have to work on that and remind ourselves.

Ive just found over the years that often "less detail is more".. that when I render the planes of the body with simple linear marks... its often way more effective then if I render it to death. And Im always pushing myself one my line quality... to make the makes around the figure be expressive and create interest and movement rather then just be a contour line. A good artist friend of mine always tells his students.. the outline is where the figure STOPS.. its not part of the figure but part of the space.

Another stunning drawing!
The form is spot on, and the reflected highlight under the shadows on her arms and legs is wonderfully observed.
Again, you've been able to retain the courseness and honesty of the charcoal without compromising any of the reality of the subject. Its really impressive.
Sorry I'm not able to offer any critique. Must be annoying me just following you around and saying "wow"...
