Description This is the first picture I've coloured with a graphics tablet, and only the second or third that I've coloured with Photoshop. So it probably wasn't the best idea to choose a scene lit entirely by candles. Bit of a nightmare, actually. Still, incredibly steep learning curve aside, I'm proud of the end result (though it's not a final image by any means - there are several bits that make me cringe, and it still needs a proper background).

Thanks, considering this was my first proper experiment with photoshop I'm still pretty chuffed with the colours.

That's an awesome picture. for being in the dark the candlelight is very well done. All the characters are very nicely done.

Wow. You do amazing work! I'm surprised you don't have more of a following here on dA.. I didn't mean that in an offensive way, its just that I'm more used to seeing people do your calibre work with 2098456 comments, watches and favs

..anyway, I'll just stop drooling now. Just happened to find your stuff in some thread in the forum *shrug*

The only thing I'd have to say I didn't quite like about it is the glow of the candle on the left. It cuts off too abruptly and doesn't really look glow-like.

Don't think I wouldn't like that sort of following. I don't understand how those guys do it, though, I only ever seem to get about one visitor a week. Ah well. Suppose I should get more involved with the forums and stuff.

I agree completely with the candle glow. It's possibly the part I'm least happy with, but it really was a last-minute thing - as I said above, the background is just a temporary one, and I just filled it black moments before posting to Deviantart - then thought, 'oops, forgot the candle flames', and scribbled them quickly in.

Thanks for all your nice compliments!

Wow is this what you can do with a graphics tablet..can't wait to get mine now.. I can imagine these guys in a cave.. my faves the guy with the hammer on the right good stuff

DarkJimbo In reply to FuzzChile [2006-10-09 19:06:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they are meant to be in a cave (or underground at least), hence their being in a mining party, which the background will make clearer if I ever get around to it.

My favourite is the one with the hammer too. :lol

Woow I LOVE it... They have such good expressions on their faces!!! And for a beginning in colouring, I can only congratulate you! You've perfectly managed the candlelight!

I love the little red imp type guy being used as a candle!

Thanks Gav, I was particularly pleased with the mushroom textures, which I then hid in darkness rather than show off in the candlelight just to be really cocky.

The little guy was actually supposed to be squinting ahead into the darkness when I first drew him if memory serves, but your interpretation is far better, so yeah, if anyone asks he's examining a stone he's just dug up.

Funny that you like him, he's actually my least favourite of the group.

Dude that’s great,
Character design, lighting, textures and all that are brilliant. Specifically like the little guy on the left looking at whatever ore or stone he's just dug up, and the mushroom on the far right, texture on that is lovely.
Look forward to seeing the others.

I love it!
Nice sense of materials.. if that makes any sense, the candle wax looks like candle wax and the rocks look like rocks, very well done all over.

Don't worry, it makes sense - thanks so much! I worked really hard on bits like the candles, the mushrooms and the big guy's rock-hammer to get them to look as much like the material they were supposed to be as I could, so it means a lot to know I got it right!
