Description
This piece of art was created for my mate's band Arrowshy. He wanted this to tie in to a song he's done based around the Redwall abbey books (about an olde-world abbey peopled by mice and foxes and things). This was supposed to be the character Mariel, based on my friend's description of her - but I've got a lot of flak from annoyed Redwall fans since posting this who say it looked nothing like her, so I changed the title. Hope it's okay now.
Only Mariel (Mathias) herself is mine, everything else is by

The woodlanders are the true vermin. Slaying their enemies at will.

They had no choice and would have let them leave if they had had the scene to. The Redwallers have shown compassion to vermin many a time only to get stabbed in the back latter.

That's really great. I like it.
It could be Mariel. She uses a blade weapon in the beginning of the book, so why not? And she got pretty banged up after falling into the sea, so I think the scars could work too.

The dead rat looks very much like a skaven from clan Eshin.

ummm...mariel doesnt use sword and sheild. she uses a rope and the knot at the end makes it like a flail and she calls it the gull whacker because she was washed up on a shore after being thrown overboard(literaly) by an evil rat pirate. Then when she washed up, a seagull tried to eat her (aw man) because the knotted rope was the only thing she had in her hand at the moment, she used it LIKE A FLAIL(dont forget that^.^) to kill the seagull. she used the rope so skillfully even though she was young(id say she was about 12 throughout the book exept for flashbacks) so she decidid(i spelled that very wrong ) to make it her weapon. after that, the gullwhacker became her most prized possesion and she NEVER let it out of her sight. throughout the book also, she NEVER EVER NEVER EVEN PICKED UP A SHEILD AND SWORD...or armor. you could also add some eyelashes...other than that its very good. try redoing it and making the good guy mouse up there mathias and give the dead one an eyepatch and a poison barb(like a scorpion) tied to his tail and make him cluny the scourge.....sorry i made u sit through this i just like correct facts

Wow... I've read through all the comments you left on this page and you really scare me. Sorry to have incurred your wrath by getting the character wrong, but as I said somewhere up above, I was just working to the description my friend gave me at the time - 'A battle-scarred female mouse with a big sword.' It's been years since I read the books so I didn't know any better. I KNOW I got it wrong, but I can't change it now.
Don't worry about the corrections though, I'm normally the annoying one who visits other people's pages and tells them what they've done wrong with characters I like, so I kinda know where you're coming from.

Its a really good picture! i've read all of the books at least twice!! Not to burst your bubble or anything, but Mariel didn't wear armor and used a knotted rope called "gullwhacker" in battle. So... That probably answers your question about whether you got it right now not. Don't get me wrong, its a really great picture.

Got no problem with critisicm, my friend, it's useful to know. I was working from the brief description my mate gave me - basically 'a female mouse who wears green who should look cool and battle-scarred with a big sword' - and the few pictures I found on the net at the time weren't much help.
Ah well. Something about rats and mice in mediaeval gear strikes me as irresistably cool, so I'll probably return to the books properly later and have another bash.

Eek!
That bit at least was deliberate actually, a female mouse with big eyelashes so you know she's a female seemed to me a bit silly and cartoony, a very lazy visual shorthand that's not particularly realistic either.
I tried to make her look very feminine, very delicate fingers and soft rounded nose and so on, but big eyelashes seemed only one step away from putting a great big bow on her head.

not big, just three plain normal even short eyelashes. maybe if your took of the armor...it would look more like mariel than like martan or mathias(muh-thi-is)

I've not read the book, but this reminds me of those Warhammer creatures the Scraven or something, warped mutant rats. Like the mouse's battledress. But wondering how do you tell a female mouse warrior from a male one ?

Ah yeah, the skaven - they were very cool. As to the sex - trust me, it would have looked quite different facially if I had been drawing a male warrior mouse (not that it would probably have made much difference, though, I suppose just looking at it it could be either!)

Well I wouldn't want to be the one to look under her tail to check..so I'll take it as red.
The whole animals as people thing is always tricky, I've yet to see anyone draw an amine catwoman/warrior types with three sets of Bra's, one for each set of nipples.. I suppose some things have got to go.
