Possible headcanon: Gray Mann heard about tentacle monsters that used to be people, and he tried to create robotic versions of them in hopes of having a bot that the mercs feared. For some reason, the tentabot had a mind of its own, and it escaped and attacked other robots it encountered.

What do you think of my idea? The only reason I can think of right off the top of my head for the Tentabot independence is that he has a stronger mind to be able to control all of his limbs and manipulate them so precisely.
