Description Would appreciate a Full View! I decided to do a color test for the pen sketch of my human Louis from Princess and the Frog. Very interesting, is all I can say. I am sure many others noticed there were times were Louis had green eyes in the film, so I assume they would be that color if he was human. That red shirt might be too blazing, but hopefully it just brings out more of his bright personality. Hope you enjoy!

Constructive criticism: There's something about him that looks off, and it might be the eyebrows. I know someone mentioned that you should make his eyes bigger, but I think while you experiment with the design, try a different eyebrow position. Disney characters are very facially expressive, and long, thin, pencil brows usually indicate wickedness.
I agree, though, that his eyes are a good size

Hmmm, you know you are exactly right. Thanks for the comment and constructive criticism, that is something I will definitely change and work with. Now that I look at his eyebrows again, they seem...just wrong.....

I will most likely do a sheet with alot of different facial expressions and full body poses and hopefully some with be spot on. Thanks again, and I do like the eyes that size too for some reason!

No problem I always have a hard time trying to get the eyebrows *just* right when I'm drawing Disney, so it's just something I've come to notice.
I think the size of his eyes reflects his original design, his gator-ness
Can't wait to see more designs!

I do notice how expressive Disney makes their characters. The eyebrows, eyes and mouth movements are pure genius and so realistic on a simpler design, but I see it takes true practice, skill and talent. Thanks, they should be up in the near future!

Appreciate it bro! I practice on so much that I don't show here. I practice on humans all the time, my sketchbook is full of life drawings. I guess I should post that sometime, but I can see an improvement in my lines, anatomy and color work. It is all coming together, slowly but surely. I hope you get that internship too man! I am going to apply myself soon.

CONSTRUCTIVE criticism: His eyes seem small and beady. sweeter characters would probably have baby eyes(HUGE)

Just an idea

I appreciate the comment and feedback. Since this is a preliminary design, I will see what he looks like with bigger eyes as you said. I feel they are expressive and just the right size, but I know everyone has their own take. I should have more drawings soon.

WHOA! Human Louis is BIG!

I heard way long ago last year before The Princess and the Frog came out, someone from IMDB say that there was a scene of Louis as a human playing in the jazz band where Naveen is dancing with the little boy on the street in that part.

But it's too bad that he never got to be human at the end. Seems like a big waste they made Louis sing When We're Human with Tiana and Naveen for nothing!

Thanks for your comment! Since he seems around 7 feet tall as a gator, he probably wouldn't be too much shorter as a human. No one has any idea how much he weighs either, heh, but I actually think I made him a little smaller than his real design might be. And you are exactly right, I wonder why they didn't actually include him ever turning human at least once. To put all that effort in that song seemed like a waste for his character.

Sorry to butt in, but not making him a human was probably for the best. I mean, whatever race they made him when he turned human, Disney would still get complaints.

darkmane In reply to belarin [2010-09-26 17:32:36 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmm, maybe so, but since his voice actor is a dark skinned African American, most likely he would be portrayed that way. There have been drawings of Tiana portrayed as a Caucasian woman too, in spite of Disney's original design. My rendition of Human Louis was just done in fun really, I know many of us try to avoid unnecessary debates and all.

Well it was! But if you notice during the Dig A Little Deeper song, Mama Odie wanted Tiana and Naveen to find out what they needed instead of what they wanted, and Naveen got to see that he needed Tiana because he loves her better than money.

Louis on the other hand, well besides wasting all of that time putting that effort into the When We're Human song into the movie, I think Mama Odie wanted Louis to see that joining the jazz music business was more important than becoming human cause that was more important instead of being something that he's not.

Very true, its just been so long since Disney did a hand drawn animated feature to this level, and it would have been great to see as many designs as possible. Especially since there aren't many African American designs going around to be honest.

Yah you're right. I feel bad for Ray that he never got to see Tiana and Naveen's human forms cause Dr. Facilier kill him

darkmane In reply to SurfsUp07 [2010-04-03 05:41:56 +0000 UTC]

True, that was too messed up! Ray was an amazing character. It shows Disney still has their magic, because they turned a firefly into something so much more. Millions were touched by a little bug, Disney can make anything into a powerful character!

Ya. And didn't it seem weird that they never explain if Charlotte had a mother or not, or why Big Daddy spoils her so much, or that Tiana's dad got killed off too early in the film also? I think he was dead during World War I cause it was reply in his photo cause of his army suit.

Seems rare that Disney ever lets both parents live for some reason. Its always just the mother or father. I wonder why that is. Its rare that there is a great backstory either. Where are Louis's parents? How did he get the way he did? All the other gators wanted to eat the frogs, yet he wants human food. But he obviously has been eating alot of something, but what? None of it was explained. But I guess us fanatics just think about things too much heheh.

SurfsUp07 In reply to darkmane [2010-04-03 16:09:46 +0000 UTC]

That's true, and Louis is a BIG gator!

He did mention that the Bayou is the best place to teach jazz music, so I'm guessing he must of learn it from someone that was human and play the trumpet.

As for the parents, I think it's cause everyone knows that not all parents stay together forever, but it's mostly divorces instead of a family death.

Louis reminds me of Tiger from An American Tail in some ways. Hopefully Disney will decide to show a backstory or a prequel showing more of the Princess and the Frog world and include Louis in that.

SurfsUp07 In reply to darkmane [2010-04-03 16:55:44 +0000 UTC]

Ya I hope so too but I think if they keep continting The Princess and the Frog, they'll probably make a new story about Tiana and Naveen's new family. It's been done before with Ariel and Eric, and Simba and Nala, and Lady and Tramp. I know there's more than that, but that's all I could think of from the top of my head already about those characters who are already becoming new parents with their own kids.
