Description Hit the download for this! It's probably too long and small for conventional Deviantart Viewing.

Did this in response toΒ FirmTub 's comment - comments.deviantart.com/1/4258…

I've never done a proper step-by-step before, so thought it might be interesting for some. As you can see, everything is hand drawn, then the process of digitally inking and colouring is the reason my stuff looks the way it does. I don't go out my way to replicate anyone, I don't trace models or other peoples stuff. The trick too drawing well is practice, and being critical of your own work enough to amend mistakes. Which my work is rife with by the way. I'm trying to distance myself from the Magnola comparisons by a playing around with some different techniques, but I guess that will follow me around while I use flat colour and blacks.

I've always been a bit wary of telling people exactly how I work, but now I'm trying to push it further, I see no harm in going through the very base technique at least. This is also the culmination of about 7 years of trial and error by the way, it was a fucking mess to begin with.

Maybe I'll do a video when I have the appropriate equipment one day.

There is a inked version available for download as well, if anyone fancies colouring their own Ninja, feel free to do what you want with it, just credit me for the inks if you post it online.

Anyway, hope its informative for those that have been asking about how I go about illustrating!

This is a really interesting process. I'm surprised at how many steps are involved when your work has such an air of effortless simplicity to it. Thank you for sharing it with us!

I omitted a fair amount of steps as well as it got too long! Glad you like it!

Style and technique are different to MignolaΒ΄s... even though the final result looks similar.

I wouldnΒ΄t be watching you if you werenΒ΄t but a copy of him.

Also, thereΒ΄s nothing wrong with tracing... itΒ΄s been done since 1400 and before, by great masters of art.Β

Go and tell Velazquez that because of that, he didnΒ΄t know how to draw, or that he wasnΒ΄t a true artist.

ItΒ΄s always interesting to look how others work. For achieving the same result, I would have used an almost completely different technique.

It gets quite complicated once you put it into the computer, but it certainly is interesting to see your process!

DarkMechanic In reply to line-melte [2014-02-28 05:52:12 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I omitted a few steps for simplicity sake as well, but it's an easy process once you do it about a thousand times.
