Description Top Left: Betta Tank
Residents:
2 male bettas separated by a divider
Apoc: 3 year old "Red/Black Devil Crowntail"
Red(aka "Old Man"): almost 4 years old "Red Unique Halfmoon"... He's a mutant.
2 Neon Tetras
2 Cardinal Tetras (long story as to why I have 2 of each, was not on purpose)
Live Anubia Plant (I really need more plants *cries*)
Setup:
10 gallon
Heater set at 75-78*F
Internal Whisper Filter
The background is a bamboo place mat.
50% water change every other week
This is a proper betta tank.

Bottom left: Goldfish Tank EDIT: They have been moved to their permanent 30 gallon tank.
Notice how it is not overcrowded. Pretty much every goldfish tank I see on DA has WAY too many fish in it. Goldfish get really big and can live over 10 years when cared for properly. Make sure you remember that when you stock your tank.
Residents:
1 Pearlscale Goldfish (Mochi )
1 Fantail Goldfish (Nori)
Setup:
10 gallon NOTE: They will need a larger (30 gal) tank when they are adults. As they are both still small, a 10 gallon is acceptable.
External Tetra Filter which provides aeration for 2 goldfish. If there were more than 2 then they would defintely need additional aeration.
The background is a bamboo place mat.
50% water change every other week
This is a proper goldfish tank.

I had rough times with goldfish. I had a few goldfish in a 50 gallon tank when I was little. They all died on me.

Petstore goldfish don't tend to be the healthiest

I agree that most goldfish tanks and overcrowded, I tend to scan DA for overstocked tanks and warn people to rethink about their stocking lists.

Unfortunately, your goldfish tank is not properly stocked.. An adult fancy goldfish would need 20 gallons to itself. Two need 30 gallons, minimum. As adults these fish will get around 10"+. A 10 gallon is exactly ten inches across. A 10 gallon is too small for any goldfish. 50% every other week is also arguably not a very good schedule, try to do 25% weekly water changes. By doing 50% bi-weekly you're letting ammonia get potentially pretty high before doing a water change. By doing them weekly you pretty much avoid ammonia all together. With goldfish weekly water changes are really a must. (especially in an overstocked tank)

I can tell you actually care about your fish, you also seem interested in their care. I really really recommend doing some research on these web sites and upgrading your fish to something larger.

KoKos is a great source for goldfish information, I highly recommend joining the forum or at least reading their articles lsited on the left side of the page.

Not to worry, I've already done the research. This is in no way a permanent tank for them. I have a 29 gallon waiting for them for when they are bigger (once they hit the 3-4 range). Right now they are both quite young and both under 3 inches. I check their ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels biweekly and do water changes accordingly. If I ever get a positive reading I do a water change immediately but *in general* the readings have been 0. I haven't had a positive reading in months. But yes, 25% weekly changes would be a better schedule and I'll work on that

The largest average pearlscale length I could ever find was around 8". Fantails generally only grow 4-6" as well. The particular pearlscale I have is of a Japanese strain that hasn't been known to grow over 6" since they are "more round" and "compact" than the pearlscales found at the local petstore. He really is a golf ball with fins, so mutated Most goldfish that grow 10"+ are veil tails and that's rare unless they are in a pond.

Oh and thank you for the links, they have some good info in them And also thank you for the concern, I'm quite glad that you pointed that out. I appreciate the advice

Aaaaaaah I'm sorry. XD I kind of go nuts with info because most people just don't know squat about goldfish.

And ten inches is a bit of an exaggeration, but it's not impossible and I say it to most people just to make sure they realize just how large these fish could become and that they are NOT small. A 4" fantail is small, ether stunted, a runt, or a young one. They should get 5+.

I'd love to have an indoor fancy goldfish pond. Like, something in my living room were you can look down into the pond and see them from the top, which is what I think is the best way to view them.

DarkMoon17 In reply to Sgt-Nelson [2011-02-14 18:14:53 +0000 UTC]

haha don't worry about it at all! I spend most of my day doing the exact same thing! And it was my fault for not specifying that in my "artist comment".

Yep, it's very true. I tell people that and "they can live over 10 years" just to give perspective Plus, what fantails don't have in length they make up for in mass, they usually weigh more than veil tails that are several inches longer. There are a few smaller fantail strains out there but I don't know how available they are as of yet. I think mine is a normal one so he'll probably be at least 5-6"... he's a little pig so I'm gonna guess 6"!

That would be just When I was house shopping last year we actually came across a house with a koi/goldfish pond in the basement! There was a living tree planted next to the pond that grew up, through the center of a spiral staircase and into the living room. SOooooo amazing One day, one day

You'll want at least 30 gallons for two adult goldfish. 20 gallons for the first goldfish, 10 gallons for each additional goldfish; good rule to live by.

i have a little three gallon tank for my betta.. but i've been wanting to get a couple of tetras or something similar to go with him. Now i am more motivated to try it out.

thanks for the information. I need more plants, too! I don't remember the name of what i have in there right now, sadly.

Oh, and what color is your Apoc? My betta is the same color.

I love fancy goldfish. Many years ago I used to have a thirty gallon with a red and white Ryukin, a black moor, and a calico oranda. They were awesome, and i miss them, but they are a bit more demanding on the upkeep than i have time for these days. I love pearlscales, but had horrible luck with them in the past. so cute though!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkMoon17 In reply to Luusan [2011-02-09 20:34:41 +0000 UTC]

I'd be careful with just a 3 gallon, it isn't really enough space for your betta to hide from other fish so it would stress him out. BUT if you got him a 10 gallon, then you definitely could

I just wish plants were cheaper D:

He's a red devil, very popular in the betta world Here's an article about betta colors! [link]

Goldfish are a bit more demanding, they are sooooo dirty! But it sounds like you had a good set up for them. These are the first goldfish I've had luck with, but then again, I paid a bit extra for them too

DarkRedTigr [2011-02-07 20:43:25 +0000 UTC]

Do most bettas attack tetras?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkMoon17 In reply to DarkRedTigr [2011-02-08 04:37:37 +0000 UTC]

They will chase tetras but since they can't swim nearly as fast, they don't tend to do any damage. It's the tetras you have to be careful with since they can tear your betta to pieces. There are only a few types of peaceful community fish I'd suggest keeping bettas with: neons, cardinal tetras, H. rasboras, well most rasboras are ok usually... Just no barbs, fast fin-nipping tetras (like rummy nose tetras), danios, angel fish, gouramis, goldfish, aggressive or large fish. Hope that helps

DarkRedTigr In reply to DarkMoon17 [2011-02-08 11:52:50 +0000 UTC]

I tried neons and he chased them. I put a cory catfish with him

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkMoon17 In reply to DarkRedTigr [2011-02-09 23:51:20 +0000 UTC]

As long as he isn't hurting them or stressing them out too much then it isn't a big deal if he chases them. As long as the neons aren't nipping at him (which I've never seen one do) then it should be ok. Cories are good companions, though they do prefer to be in schools of 3+

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkRedTigr In reply to DarkMoon17 [2011-02-09 23:53:17 +0000 UTC]

I took the neons out and placed them in my 30 gallon. I have 2 cories in my 30 gallon and they are doing fine and one in a 5 gallon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkMoon17 In reply to DarkRedTigr [2011-02-11 16:55:41 +0000 UTC]

That was probably a good choice if the betta was stressing them. Generally, it is best to keep cories in groups of 6+ since they are schooling fish [link] but they will tolerate smaller groups

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkRedTigr In reply to DarkMoon17 [2011-02-11 20:44:30 +0000 UTC]

My cories seem to be fine. I'm going to get another to put in my 5 gallon. I have no room in my 30 gallon to place anymore fish.

As long as you read enough about your fish before you buy them and have everything planned out before hand, you shouldn't have a problem. Of course, you also need to choose healthy fish, which might be why sometimes your fish die immediately!

Thank you! Not really, I just add FloraPride (by Tetra) after I do water changes Anubis are great because they are very low maintenance and can survive just about anything (I travel a lot b/c school, so all fish + plants have to be sturdy).

TOTALLY AGREE about the overcrowding issue with fish tanks on DA. It's like everyone sticks their bettas in cups or goldfish in a tiny bowl that fits less than 3 gallons of water in it. And people eat it up. Except their fish are incredibly uncomfortable because when they grow they grow the wrong way internally. And also most likely don't clean the tanks/bowls often enough to keep the water in good shape and disease free.

I could understand if someone was ignorant and when you told them they were wrong about it and offered help/advice they took it, but they don't. They just get butthurt.

I have a 50 gallon tank with two ryukins and a handful of other fish I looooove my tank. Only problem is that it's vertical, so it's taller than me...and cleaning is a huge hassle because of it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkMoon17 In reply to squidbrains [2011-02-09 21:04:30 +0000 UTC]

So frustrating It's usually ignorance since petstore people just sell fish and don't inform people of what they are buying (or aren't allowed to say anything that would jeopardize a sale). And people are to lazy to look things up themselves or even care to know.

A 50 gallon vertical!? Do you have a pic, I'd love to see!

squidbrains In reply to DarkMoon17 [2011-02-09 22:42:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.... animals are treated as merchandise and not a living thing. PetSmart is especially bad with this. I try to shop at smaller stores and mom and pop shops. Prices are generally way up there but the plants that I've bought from these places are living and going on strong. Some have lasted over a year. They are always 15+$ though...but it's worth it.

Yeah, I will upload a photo tonight for you It looks amazing at night time. You know I got a vertical because I don't have room for anything else. It is a major hassle, but totally worth it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkMoon17 In reply to squidbrains [2011-02-11 16:59:22 +0000 UTC]

Goldfish and bettas really suffer from this train of thought And you're right, Petsmart is pretty bad about it, and many of the Petcos around here are also sad. I wouldn't be able to work at any of them because I'd be correcting the customers too much >.> I'd get fired. The mom and pop stores are great; expensive but the fish and plants tend to be so much healthier and they will inform you about the fish before selling it to you (generally).

Thanks! Verticals are tough, especially for short people but they look awesome Can't wait to see!

Calico pearlscale with an oranda's wen? Adorable!

Also I SOOOO agree. My setups are :

1-1 inch calico ryukin[Let] in a 10 gallon

2-5 inch goldfish[Taco and Tran], a Red capped oranda and a telescope, in a 20 gallon.

I've had Taco and Tran since they were barely an inch long, I've had them over 4 years :3
