Just a progression timeline. The idea of Batman's early years, to middle age, to later darker years.I wasn't happy with the finished version of the original image. So I made the changes to make it look darker (like the second one) than my friend asked if I could put long ears

Ya, I'm on the fence between both. I love the long ears because it reminds me of gothic Batman, crouched on a gargoyle, with a huge flowing cape, ready to pounce on a victim and scare the crap out of him.
Where as the short ears reminds me of a very stealthy, sly ninja-like Batman who would take out 10 guys without them even knowing it.

That's an interesting point you have there regarding the short ears. I've never looked at it that way.

lol. Ya that's why I can never decide which I prefer, there is an advantage to both designs (in my opinion)

Interesting idea, but I think more changes might have been nice-aside from the color and stubble. Batman's costume has seen more dramatic structural changes, as well as changes in demeanor and, hell, even lighting. The intention, that is, showing Batman through the ages, would have been more clear. As of now, it sort of comes off as three slight variations on one costume.

But I do see where you are coming from, if I was to do an actual progression it would be more of a drastic change (rather than just colour and stuble)

Well I originally didn't plan on showing Batman from beginning to end. I was just having some fun and did a tutorial for comic hero portraits. Than I decided I didn't like the style I went with at first, and than I added the long ears because my friend asked me if I could.
The progression from year one to present was just an after thought for fun. It was never planned.
