Hi guys! I happen to be finishing off 4 more characters to be added to the Character Profile section of the official TGAF website. Those characters include Ma Fei, Parmir, Healix & Laurine Glory.

During that time I've figured that it's time I did a tutorial based on my experience as a comic and concept artist.

I've been asked by fans and friends to do a tutorial of some sort and I felt that this would be a special tribute especially to TGAF fans.

This will be useful for those who were eager to know a little bit more on how I go about colouring my COLOUR WALK series.

So yeah this was all done in one night and I'm happy with the result. = )

Hope this will not only entertain but also educate artists of all skill levels. Keep up the awesome work guys! I never tire of your awesome work (especially to those who have made the effort to draw wonderful TGAF fanart!) *thumbs up*

Hey. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a while ago, a so-called "Follower of Light" oon YouTube claims that art is forbidden as he "read from the Bible" and threatened that all artists are sinners (just like the Westboro Church claims all homosexual people are sinners). What a bastard! And so I said, "Even the police and the government use drawings! The police use drawings for accurate suspect portraits and reconstructions! If art was forbidden, the police and the government would say so!" And so he/she said "The Government should ban art." What an asshole! Possibly another Anonymous attacker. Don't pay any attention to those dictating pricks.

That was a nice little tutorial ^^ Nice to see someone put something a little different into their tutorials, out of curiosity where did you get the SRA music from, I'm kinda looking for the opening its quite a nice song that helps me to draw btw I was wondering have you ever thought of using more tones in your colouring, perhaps three or four, it looks good now but perhaps that extra bit of depth can help ^^

Saria-Darklindale [2007-12-31 00:54:19 +0000 UTC]

Hello, nice tutorial, very helpful , but, i have to ask you something your drawing size usually is huge when you scan it do you resize it to a wished nice and small size or do you keep it and in the you resize it? does it influence something in the shading? like.. .i dunno, sometimes shading looks, so.... 'dead' and yours not... [that's my problem with the cellshading, shading looks too dead]

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

darkspeeds In reply to Saria-Darklindale [2008-01-01 01:25:02 +0000 UTC]

I don't resize the images until I've completed it in full colour. Keeping a copy of your finished artwork in high resolution will look much better when reduced in size later. You can also print it out without have to suffer with pixeled graphics.

BlueBead [2007-12-30 22:52:17 +0000 UTC]

My gosh! I would go insain trying this on only one layer! xD My style is totally dependent on many, many layers!

I'm quite amazed at how you did the line art. When I used lines that I created with actual ink end up looking like this --> [link] (REALLY old picture) The lines are always lumpy and uneven. I'd like to try this style just to figure out just how you make lines as good as you do with real ink. xD

Great job! I really need to make a video tutorial... People keep bugging me for it. xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

darkspeeds In reply to BlueBead [2008-01-01 01:27:43 +0000 UTC]

Not bad! Just stick to your ways and you'll discover that there is potential to make it an effective method that suits you.

BlueBead In reply to darkspeeds [2008-01-01 02:54:16 +0000 UTC]

Yup! I'm just envious of your method because it's so simple and it still looks great. xD My method takes soooo long!

Well that was an interesting treat to watch~

I never realized how easy your process was until watching it! Makes my attempts sound obnoxiously and unnecessarily time taking, but nonetheless everybody has their own way of doin' things, which makes it that much more of their own piece when complete~

HeadShot-X [2007-12-30 21:41:02 +0000 UTC]

I didn't quite understand what the second step in cleaning the linework is. The image was too messy for me to read the name of the tool and I didn't quite get what you said. Could you please writhe the name of the tool?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

darkspeeds In reply to HeadShot-X [2008-01-01 03:00:00 +0000 UTC]

At the top right hand corner is a list of tabs.

Go to:
Image>Adjustments>Threshold.

Adjust according to your desired threshold level (I usually go for 180)

Next go to Filter>Other>Maximum (to 1 level)

Your inked image should look cleaner now. *thumbs up*

Awesome tutorial! That does it. Now I want to ask for a scanner for my b-day And I might look into getting photoshop. (although I cant break from the habbit of drawing in flash). Your coloring is really well done.

AgentWebdog [2007-12-30 19:27:22 +0000 UTC]

I actually took notes on that. XP (Stupid pen didn't work until the end so I had to re-watch it three times XXD)

Mr. Darkspeed's ya spoutin' out all your secrets! (Oh no not that I'm complaining XD)

Actually I can't thank you enough for this tutorial. One of the things I always have had the worst trouble with (Other then drawing/shading/inking in general) is cleaning up my line art in photoshop. Now the question is~! I wonder if 4.0 has the two tools you mentioned. XP
Someones gonna be playing with photoshop today. XD

But again, I can't thank you enough for the tutorial! *Skips off merrily with my notes*

MysteryEzekude [2007-12-30 18:39:47 +0000 UTC]

Looks simple, but it's not completely easy for me to do. I often do the inking on paper and then colour and shade digitally. The colouring and shading for my latest Ouendan fan pictures took me about...4 hours? Anyway, thanks for the tips.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MysteryEzekude In reply to MysteryEzekude [2007-12-30 18:51:26 +0000 UTC]

And also, I haven't tried the Threshold technique before. I normally use the Brightness, Contrast and Saturation technique. That probably works as good as that. Plus, I use the Colour Layer Multiply technique before using the Paint Bucket, if you know what I mean. The other tips sound very useful. I find it a bit hard to do skilled shading like that. But my skill has improved now that I've used the Dodge and Burn tools. Thanks for the help!

Well, excellent for a video of 11 mins and 41 secs XD Explained in the smallest details, even when yu show yur traditionnal tools |D At least, like that, those who would like to color and shade like yu, specially yur fans, could be satisfied.
