Ah, but that's the thing.
His childhood (and much of his life, really) was so over-the-top abusive and horrible it becomes comedic. If something is so weird it doesn't happen in real life, it can be used in a kid's show.
Divorce, on the other hand, is something Disney (and kid's shows in general) have tried to stay away from, but since that kind of thing is so common nowadays, portraying it has become more acceptable in kid's shows.
