I find the boxers hilarious. Then again...I find Doof's choice of underwear hilarious in general. For example,I always joke about characters wearing "a little red speedo". And what ends up happening in canon? Doof actually owns one.

Does he? I've honestly never paid attention. Though, even in canon, characters like Doof have wore boxers and briefs. (Heck, even I wear different kinda of underwear, depending on my mood.) So who's to say Phineas doesn't switch it up once in a while?

I think it's more like Doof is so socially awkward, he'd think nothing about doing something so childish...Only to realize how creepy and awkward he was being.
Which is probably why "Well....this is awkward." is one of his catch phrases.
