I have fired the AK and the FN. But they all look the same, I think.

I heard that the FAL had ridiculously high recoil in full auto mode, so almost always had to be fired in semi-auto. Is this true?

I've never fired one in full auto, but it has a pretty high recoil. In South African service it was called the R1, it was replaced by the R4 and R5 (same rifle, R4 had a longer barrel, R5 was a para weapon - why I used it). But we used the R1 as a target rifle, the barrel is very long for an assault rifle and it is very accurate over distances of 300 and 400 meters. I honestly can not think of a practical application where you'd even consider full auto. It'd be like using a violin to chop wood.

i guess they must have deliberately bent the barrels on some of these to make sure nobody got any ideas of pilfering from the museum. noticed they did the same thing on those grease gun drop in barrels.

Actually, the curved barrel was an actual attachment developed for the MP-43/44 as a means for shooting around corners.
