Description A larger contemporary of the 155mm "Long Tom," the 8-inch (203mm) M115 would have just as long a service life, operating from World War II (this particular piece being a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge) to Korea and finally onto Vietnam. However, it also had the more grim mission of launching tactical nuclear artillery shells in the event of a Soviet attack on NATO, and a number served in this deterrence role in West Germany until the early 1970s. While powerful, it was felt that the M115 was under-ranged, and so unlike the Long Tom, few remain in active service today.

How can a Towed gun need 14 people to operate it?

Nice pic man.

You sure it was this 9 incher that was used for tactical nukes? I know we had Atomic Betty cannons that served in Germany (and there should be at least one at Aberdeen if I recall), but I can't say for certain what the caliber was. I could have sworn it was larger due to the fact that the nukes of the time weren't very compact.

Well, according to FAS[link] it did have a tactical nuclear role at one point. I thought the US had several systems that could fire atomic shells, especially as nuclear weapons technology allowed them to be made smaller.

It might have. I only recall Atomic Betty and her battery of like...6 guns I believe. Self-propelled Artillery I know pretty decently, but the towed stuff? Not so good lol.
