it's a little complicated to explain over a comment XD the basic idea though is, figure out what the minimum wage is in your area and don't go below that number on your prices. figure out how long it takes you to do your art, what the materials cost, etc, and calculate how much you should be getting paid :3 you shouldn't give our art away for pennies :3

I'm not sure if my sketches are worth to be $5
I do traditional and digital sketches both in the same way... but for some reason I can be finished in 20 minutes or an hour for a digital sketch.
For a clean traditional one will it be 30-40 minutes or an 1. But it really depends on the details of the character OR how many characters I draw on the paper or layer
And sometimes I color the sketch lightly in with the brush or I color the traditional one with grey tints.

of course you're worth $5. Regardless of talent (and you do have some!) you're taking your time out of your day to do draw instead of spending time with your family, working at a better paying job, or doing something you really enjoy. Don't sell yourself short.

Why thank you
But cause I have many steps for a single sketch, cause of the views of Head Shot - Half Body - Full Body
Then I'm afraid my prices will be too high since it's the first time I want to make money with my art cause I'm turning 16 this month and need to work.
But I'm afraid my prices will be to high since other better and older artist got then lower prices instead when I just see the list of prices I'm making.
I just don't know on what level talent I am at or how much every step worth is and it's a hard time figuring that out

don't fret too much about other artists ^^ The great thing about selling artwork is that there's no other artist in the world that does artwork exactly like you. People will buy your artwork because they like it, and you were the artist, not just because yours are cheaper. Don't let the competitive market keep you from demanding fair pay for your time and talent.

Ok, then I ask this; What is the maximum price that my art level can reach? (before I overdo the prizes XD)

DarlingMionette In reply to Truth-Lely-Gaia [2013-03-18 20:36:50 +0000 UTC]
whatever you want to set it at really XD a good starting price is $5 - 20 when you're first starting out, but as you get better and you have more followers, you can raise it. right now I have mine set from $10-80 which quickly goes up everytime someone adds a character (A fully painted full-body picture with 2 characters on my scale is $160) :3 but starting out you want to keep some cheaper prices until people are sure of your work ethic and that you aren't going to cheat them. it draws them in :3 once you're more established it's easier to raise your prices

Truth-Lely-Gaia In reply to DarlingMionette [2013-03-18 21:35:47 +0000 UTC]
ok, but still it'll be over the 20 cause if they want some details added like texts of the characters or couple's name, which style they want, colored eyes (only for line arts, inked and gray tint arts) and background. But the background prices will be different cause it depends on the details since I'm still learning how my make a VERY detailed background. But I'm practiving one with Shadow wearing glasses, leaning against a wall in grass, and behind the wall is a big blossom tree :3
I love those trees

What am going to do..is a tad not the norm..I make Fan Videos.
Off Fandoms and what not. "Crossovers" I will make it all points so that way am not robbering from real video creators. Such as Disney. As its a huge in vidder world.
But it gives me an idea. This what I do. And so you know. The two girls were never in same film. But am sure you saw "Last Unicorn" so you know..all Ama scenes are..maniped [link]

huh. I didn't know people did mashups like that, but technically yes, that's infringing on copyrights because you're taking artwork that someone else created and reusing it directly. It'd be a different story if you drew them yourself, but even then, the characters belong to someone else and you probably don't have permission to use them. You certainly wouldn't be able to sell those without it being illegal.

some people prefer them for one reason or another ^^ I don't get them often, but when I do I use them to buy sub's rather than real money - it gives me an excuse to buy one when I'm not sure if I want to bother with actual money XD.

Thanks for the guide, ive done work for people but ive never done commisions before.
You mentioned getting a commisioner to note you, what would i see if someone noted my paypal?

I meant you should have them either email you or note you here on deviant art. you can attach small messages to payments in paypal, but they are very short.

Great! one more question i work traditional and graphic.A sketch done on on Ai compared to paper, any difference in fees or same fee?

traditional work, i'd increase the fee because you're also paying for supplies like paper, pencils, and paints :3

Dude this is was a total life-saver. Some people tell me my art is good, but I'm not entirely sure and I'm not entirely confident that its commission worthy yet so I'll practice just a bit more. Thanks for the pricing though, I was originally thinking of doing it cheaper but your $ 6/7 philosophy makes total sense. Good thing I had the foresight to search for some advice before I thought anymore. Thanks!

Do i just e-mail the commissioned picture to the commissioner?
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
ThestralWizard In reply to B-Beth-Chan [2013-02-13 04:03:19 +0000 UTC]
Emailing is usually a good idea, but if the files are too big for simply being attached to the email the best way is to send an email with a Dropbox link to the pieces - the comissioner just has to click the link and download the files with no inconvenients to the deliver of the email

XD thank you, and yah - unfortunately not every country get's paid as highly, but also not every country has it's cost of living so high -_- it's extremely difficult to live on the minimum wage here :/ I did it for a year and basically lived in a hell-hole and lived off a loaf of bread for a month at a time. XD I don't recommend it.

lucid-light In reply to DarlingMionette [2013-02-12 14:55:13 +0000 UTC]
Oh that sounds awful I hope that you are doing better now!
In Prague if a person earns minimum wage, the rent costs about 3/4 of their income (if they live alone in a flat). Sharing flat with friends will decrease the rent cost but still one can't afford to eat out or go to cinema or pretty much anything. I have no idea how can a person live off a minimum wage, especially when they have kids :/ It's tough world for uneducated people.

DarlingMionette In reply to lucid-light [2013-02-12 14:59:11 +0000 UTC]
agreed - it is tough :/ but you learn to sort of adjust your needs to your means when it comes down to it. I always made sure my bills were paid, and whatever was left over went to food. There were no luxuries what so ever, but at the end of the year living like that I wasn't in any debt - which is very important XD

Excuse me, but I have a 10 year old cousin who, in my opinion, is an absolute fabulous artist...
Then again, you did say average. I know my brother still can't draw stick men. xD
At least I'm better than him.
