You said, "THis is a competitive market," which is gramatically incorrect

DarlingMionette In reply to lowfn [2013-07-28 04:09:41 +0000 UTC]

That's not grammatically incorrect - though it may be miss-typed. (just like your spelling of grammatically)... but this isn't a writing tutorial either, it's a commission guide... so I don't see how your comment is relevant or appropriate.

awwies, don't get discouraged. If you don't think you're up to starting commissions right now, then practice. The more you do art and practice it, the more you improve. You'll get there ^^

To be honest, I'm not much into cartoons or fanart, so I'm perhaps not the best person to ask ^^

This was very helpful! I have one question, if you don't mind: what is the average pixel dimensions/resolution you use for your commissions? And how large does that translate into prints? Thank you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to reynagroff [2013-07-04 01:15:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I usually start with around 1500x1500 300dpi for the work I do, but it varies from artist to artist. usually 300dpi prints well, as for translating to prints... i'm not sure of the dimensions needed, but most art programs can tell you the conversion to inches if you play with the canvas size settings.

This is a very helpful guide, thank you I have one question though: I'm hoping to open commissions very soon, and feel ready for it, but I'm worried that I won't get any commissioners :/ I've told my watchers and followers on dA and tumblr that I'm considering this, but I'm not that popular, and don't know who will be interested. Is there any other way I could let more people know when I'm doing commissions, or should I just see what happens?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to DogsLikeBones [2013-06-09 19:44:08 +0000 UTC]

If you run a search, there a BUNCH of groups on DA just for people to advertise their commissions It may be helpful to join a few and post up a commission example/price list there

Wait, wait, do a search for what, "advertise"?
By the way, very helpful guide, the colors are a little bit harsh on the eyes, but good read overall.

Thank you

Hi there, I've considered doing commissions sometime, but not until my skill is a bit better. Anyway, I had just one quick question which I believe you answered in the tutorial, but I think I missed it, sorry. XD The question that I have is that because I'm a digital artist, how does the person who commissioned me get their art? I mean if the commissioned work is on my dA, wouldn't other people be able to get it too?

Sorry if it's a simple thing, but it's the simple ones that always escape me! XD And thank you so much for the tutorial, it'll help me so much when I get to really doing commissions, and stop doing just requests all the time!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to CalebP1716 [2013-06-10 16:03:27 +0000 UTC]

whichever way you want is the short answer the long answer is : you can email it to them, print it and mail it.. post it to your deviant art..whatever way you feel comfortable with. If you post it to your DA, yah, other people could download it.. but usually it's not worth worrying about.. most people don't want a picture of someone else's characters.

Very helpful problem is im not sure if my art is good enough for comissions... being that you seem wrather experienced would you say im ready?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to charlie733 [2013-06-06 13:08:30 +0000 UTC]

XD I try not to judge people's work for commissions (i get asked all the time) the best judge you have for that is YOU, or your watchers. If you feel like you can take on the responsibility of doing commissions, open them see what happens. If you're wary of it, ask your watchers if they would be interested in commissions from you.. because those are the people who'll be buying them

If you don't mind, I have a question...
I already prepared something,
but I'm not sure if my art is good enough : [link]
So, what do you think ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to ManlyTurnip [2013-05-11 19:02:55 +0000 UTC]

Art is subjective ^^ Only you will know when you're comfortable selling your work. If you aren't sure if you're ready, then take some time to keep improving, and come back to it when you're confident that you are at that point in your work ^^ You can't go into selling your work if you don't believe in it.

DarlingMionette In reply to Wakamash [2013-04-03 13:02:31 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wakamash In reply to DarlingMionette [2013-04-03 18:45:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow!
That's really surprising! It's just that I remember talking to someone when I set up commissions previously and they were talking about how advertising to sell your art on dA of ineffective, considering that majority of people on here are artists themselves.
But now I know that really it doesn't have to be like that and it really is down to how you get your info out there; thanks again!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to Wakamash [2013-04-04 00:09:06 +0000 UTC]

XD The thing about deviantart is, because there -are- so many artists here, a lot of people have figured out that when they want a commission, this is the first place to check.. it's certainly more efficient than trying to find individual artists on google :3 here they can shop around, compare prices, and meet a huge array of artists.
