Description I think it's pretty useful for artists to know a bit about copyright. Hopefully this is a useful resource!

Feedback would be helpful if you can spare the time ^__^

Hey!
I really think this is helpful: it's clear and concise (I think that word exists in english). What helped me most was the thing that you CAN use other's images for personal study I was really wanting to do that, but was afraid that I'd be going over some copyright. You said also that it can only be published with acknowledgment must be given to the creator of the original.Β
I got two (and a half) questions!Β
So I can use someone's work from here on dA for studies purposes, even if he doesn't let me - or hasn't answered to me asking for his permission? And if I want to publish it here I just need to give him the credit?Β
And last... Hum maybe I forgot it...

Thank you for any answers! - and since this can be something that gets complicated if not done right... could you cite your sources? Or some source. I don't doubt you, but citing sources I think helps validate even more this info!

Well for study purposes it's perfectly fine yes, but the artist in question who wouldn't allow you or hasn't answered back, may like the credit where credit is due, unless you copied the image piece by piece. Heavily referencing, or just referencing shouldn't anger any artist so long as credit is given.

This is full of great information, In my case I had a model use images (without full permission) on her cosplay page, and she then publicly defamed me while using said images that had my watermark on them... I had to resort to using the DMCA to get them removed from FB, tumblr, ext... sadly she claimed she owned the images of her and committed perjury since I never gave her full ownership over my images. Had i had money for a lawyer who could do the case, i would have done it by now.

Ive got a question about sculptures. If a person for instance make a posable fox with wings in its face and then another person wanna make a fox with wings in its face is that not possible since the first person already created such a creature? Or is it so that as long as its not a exact copy you still can create something similar as another? I mean, otherwise only one person could make for example unicorns and the rest making them would be breaking copyright rules. Or?

Fhalei In reply to Escaron [2013-07-27 15:23:48 +0000 UTC]

Sorry it took so long for me to reply, I've been on holiday!

Concepts and ideas are not protected by copyright, so I don't think the first person could stop others from making a fox with wings in its face. However, that person's specific creation or character cannot be copied. Another person could use the concept/idea, but the thing they create with it must be unique/significantly different.Β

For example, anyone can write a story about a millionaire vigilante with a traumatic past, but only DC comics can portray Batman or a character that could be confused for Batman.Β Hope this helps.

Nice and simple, the way I like it. Thanks for this! It was most informative; I'd previously taken a course that covered copyright law regarding creative materials, but this was a nice refresher and greatly simplified some things! Kudos.

Thankfully, the US Copyright office's website does a good job of explaining a lot of this, but still, it's great to see an easy to read article for beginners unsure of what they're getting into! I'm sure a lot of people are going to appreciate this, thanks for posting. ^^

This is great! Some people just don't understand this sort of thing... Especially when it comes to contacting a person who's stolen work. It doesn't help anything to just yell and scream at them; it ends up turning into a cat fight that could have been easily avoided
What I really like about this is that, like what AzureInfinity said, it's not just some boring wall of text on a white background, nor is it full of eye cancer-inducing rainbows and glitter and illegible fonts. I like the different colors used to help break it into sections. It flows very nicely!
And I love your tl:dr at the end XD

Treori [2013-06-18 14:23:06 +0000 UTC]

That's helpful
Though in Britain we don't need to register our work to sue someone if they have stolen stuff (I know this because I recently had a certain website lift my images from deviantArt and have started hosting them as 'free to use' wallpapers. I can sue them if I want to, I'm still debating whether to do it or not, I have a great lawyer waiting for my nod, and it doesn't cost me anything at all. If I don't win, I don't pay any fees, if I do he gets a cut out my fee, but I just want the site to remove my images, especially since they claim to only use images that don't infringe upon copyright)

AzureInfinity In reply to Treori [2013-06-18 14:51:23 +0000 UTC]

Seriously, so for it, sue them. You have all the ones to win, right? Plus other people they might be ripping off can hear of this and join you if you make a stand ;3
