Description
...Some diamonds that I'm pretty happy about.. I've redone this diamond model a few times and I finally got something that I think is acceptable (maybe..?) Any tips/critiques/suggestions would be appreciated...especially concerning caustics...Cinema 4D

Update: 09.19.08
After not touching this piece for three years, I finally dug it up and tried to make some changes that some of you suggested. Mostly, I reduced the reflection somewhat on the marble floor. Still didn't get much with the caustics; it seems that the default renderer for C4D just isn't powerful enough to get the realistic type of look I was looking for. Oh well, what's done is done. I'll keep this one this way as a learning experience and try to make an entirely new one in the future....

gorgeous stones! The only thing is, I think diamonds refract light more vibrantly. Maybe these are crystals? I love them none the less

I haven't done 3D in a while, but could you maybe texture the light source with the rainbow light spectrum? It just lacks that intense, almost white, sparkle. I don't know. Well done anyway

Huh...I never knew you could put a texture on a light source...I'll have to give that a try

INcredibly beautiful!!!
p.s.
if not a secret, how did you draw the diamonds??? From zero, or is there a pre-set model anywhere?

where did you find the dimensions of the brilliant cut?
I've tried to make this in Google Sketchup but i couldn't find the angles.

I thought this was dead-on realistic, and realy quite impressive. But somehow, despite the photorealism of this piece, I could recognize it as CGI.
The diamonds themselves are quite impressive, both visually and technically. I think they are more than realistic enough to carry the photorealistic element. And yet I looked at this image, and could immediately spot that it wasn't real.
Then I realized why this image feels somehow still too synthetic.
Not only are the diamonds perhaps a bit too blue to account for the blueish lighting--perhaps the secondary lightsource somehow got caught in them more than it should? If you intentionally went for blue diamonds, I could understand it there. But with a general bluish tone going on throughout the picture, it seems like their color could be misunderstood pretty quickly given their environment.
But also, the reflections of light and rainbows from the spotlight onto the marble from these diamonds appear largely absent. You might want to fiddle with the refraction, ray-tracing, and general light bendyness, as diamonds do act as prisms, and these seem to be keeping the light more or less for themselves instead of sharing it around.
I'm no CGI modeler/renderer myself besides in the world of fractalmaking, but I hope my comments help with sorting out any further realism issues.

Haha, don't worry, I'm not extremely well-informed about renderers (or terminology) either, but your comments were really helpful. I know what you mean about the blue..I had tried out some HDRI lighting (is that the term?) with some kind of blue-ish background to make up for the lack of rainbows (which I'm still trying to figure out). So I guess the fact that we never see that blue background either kind of confuses the viewer. Seeing that this is an old piece I should probably hunt around for tutorials on how to add in those damn rainbows . Thanks for the input

DeepChrome In reply to darthasterisk [2008-05-08 23:20:05 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome. I meant the overall blue lighting. I think your lack of background is fine; the surface on which the diamonds are sitting show enough of an environment to work off of. I think the minimalism will help keep the focus of the art on the diamonds and the way the light reacts to them.
It's refreshing to hear of a 3D artist who isn't completely savvy with the terms, and yet still is pulling off some nice images. Best of luck with the piece, should you decide to take it further.

it has been mentioned previously, but the refractive index of diamonds is higher (this looks really like pirty crystals) the light rays refracting (should you want them to look more like diamond) generally come out as rainbows.
other then that, your modeling of the crystals is awesome.

Yeah, that was one of the things I was having problems with (with the caustics). And I still don't know how to add in those rainbows..I was hoping someone might be able to help me with it . Thanks for the input. I was waiting for someone to point that out hehe
